I think CnC3 and Red Alert 3 have definitely come close. Sure compared to the PC version of the game they are terrible. But as their own they are really good.

Apart from the very pixelated graphics, I actually liked starcraft 64.

I have the PC version of both these games but they are quite nice to play in on the lounge room tv.

I dont think strategy will be big on consoles because they cant support as many units on screen as a PC, does really make a difference. Mouse and Keyboard, can be emulated ok on a gamepad, but it wouldnt surprise me if the next gen has a ball mouse type thing to capture the strategy market.

You know what doesn't suck ass, though? Grammar and proper punctuation.

OT: Console RTSs can totally work. I thought that Halo Wars was a step in the right direction, and Endwar had some highlights. They're both much better than Starcraft 64.
Up yours ***** I for a matter of fact am Turkish and living in Bulgaria and I don't know your suck ass language that much OK.Also I've never heard of Starcraft 64.
Oh really? No shit? That's cool.

As this is an English-speaking forum it would only stand to reason that someone who chooses to post here would learn the basics of the language and then at least try to implement them. And then maybe not be all bitchy when someone calls them out on their ineptitude.

All I was asking for was maybe a couple periods or commas. If I went onto a Turkish/Bulgarian server or forum and posted in barely comprehendable "sentences," then I would fully expect someone to call me out.

Back to Starcraft 64, it was on the N64 and it was the console port of Starcraft. It sucked because of horrible controls and iffy multiplayer.
Well I guess your right sorry for the "bitchy" response I was really angry when I came home also what's cool. And I'm still learning both Bulgarian and English.Bulgarian is a fucking hard language but I think I know all of the swear words.

I think Halo Wars did an okay job on the console controls but it was hardly the first RTS I've played on a console. There was one on the original Xbox called 'Alien Versus Predator: Extinction' and I gotta say it played pretty well. Took a while to get used to the controls but once you worked them out it was just so smooth and easy to play. However AVP did have a PC port I'm pretty sure so I'm not sure if I can count it.
So I think Halo Wars was alright as a console RTS, it got the controls right and it was interesting as an exclusive to the consoles... but it had already been proven that RTS controls can work on a console.

Although I have never known the spear wall to be a particularly common tactic of Rome, but whatever.
Try playing with anything that requires more tactics then "Build 20 of the best legionaries available followed by Ctrl+A and M2 on the enemy general". Any of the greek states is very reliant on their phalanxes.

I don't just use legionares, I also usually have a healthy backing of archers and artillery. Also, I haven't unlocked them yet. I can't really seem to be able to beat the game. I think it's the way I play, I don't really expand much, I just try and get my cities to be productive. Also I keep a lot of units in my cities to defend rather than using them for expansion.

Artillery is a waste of a slot when not sieging something that has to be taken RIGHT NOW. If you don't have legionaries, take Principes. The same durability, stamina and armor piercing javelins, only missing out on he (useless) turtle formation. Archers are also expensive and rarely kill their own worth, especially against armored foes. You can leave most of your cities empty except for a bunch of Town Watch and an upgraded smithy(and if possible, a temple of mars) and a stable every 10 cities or so, with a general and about 5-6 Equites for rebel crushing. when playing with the red romans, you can safely steamroll everything in europe until the civil war starts or you encounter Macedon. When playing the the green romans, ignore greece and head north immediately for a far easier time conquering new provinces. When playing with the blue ones, pacify carthage, maybe take the rich coastal cities and then attack southern france. The money's in western europe and so is the least resistance. Or, if you are ballsy enough, a preemptive strike against egypt and a colony in the nile delta/holy land. Don't bother chasing them into the desert though, everything is remote, full of rebels and generally worth less then the troops needed to hold it.

I just got a copy of halo wars, and personally I think they may have almost perfected console controls.

Nah, I used to think so until I went back to the PC and marveled at the precision of the mouse.

The only reason I think it worked for you is because Halo Wars is relatively simple. I mean compared to some other RTSs, there alot less units and split second decisions don't matter as much as say in a game like Starcraft. Plus are divided into squad so selecting doesn't take too much effort.

I'm not hating on Halo Wars or anything, but it really was made for consoles and that in itself represents how far an RTS for consoles can go.

Halos wars??? They did what exactly?

When it came to proving weather or not RTSs can work on a console, Starcraft for the N64 beat them to it sorry.

If the kind of voice control that Endwar supported becomes more developed, the end of the PC RTS reign will come, as the keyboard and mouse advantage will surpassed by the speed and ability of the voice command system.

But a PC will be much better at a voice control system(more possessing power and whatnot).

AND would still have the keyboard and mouse.
