It happened. After 2 years and 8 months, my PS3 got the YLOD. I have found a fix that requires me to open the machine up and use a technique called reflowing on the motherboard which is supposed to resuscitate the processors and then replace the thermal paste and put it all back together. I wish I saw this coming. Driving home from work today I remembered a comment I made to myself while playing a game. I said, "The PS3 has gotten a bit louder than I remember." DUR ITS OVERHEATING YOU ASSHOLE! If it was a PC I would have figured it out and took the preemptive measures but for some reason, I though my PS3 was invincible. So now I have 3 options.

Fix it myself. Totally doable, just need to get a hold of a Heat Gun.

Send it to Sony. 150 bucks, the probably just send me a refurbished system. This worries me because I want the 60gb version and I don't know if they will send me that. I like my backwards compatibility. Also I hear they don't back up your saved data which I would have to do myself using someone's PS3.

Send it to another repair facility. I found www.videogame911.com. They seem pretty good and I will probably go with them over sending it to Sony. They will be cheaper, back up my saves for me and send me back MY system with the new parts it needs. Hopefully with better thermal paste.

Last whine: of all the things Sony went cheap on to make the system cheaper, they made em with shitty thermal paste. All I have read on other YLOD threads is how bad the original systems thermal paste was and how it would dry out way to soon and cause the overheating. The choice to chose shitty thermal paste instead of higher quality stuff is causing the YLOD. Otherwise, the system would probably have practically no hardware failures.

So I just want to hear your guys' YLOD stories. RROD stories are alright too but I care more about PS3 stuff cause that is the situation I am dealing with now.

My Xbox 360 quit after 6 months. I nearly screamed because of it.

I totally love the exclusion of the PC in the poll options, it's like they don't even exist! [/angsty-sarcasm]

My PC died on me a couple of weeks ago, a nasty virus killed my hard drive, and then killed my mobo, vid card, and processor. Nasty virus.

Now my PC is fixed with sub-par parts... it doesn't meet Bioshock 2s recommended system requirements =[

I think I'm on my fifth 360. I'm not joking. Thank goodness for extended warranties.

It wasn't anti-pc that I didn't put that in there. Just didn't think of it. All PCs die eventually. I mean you can always repair them but there are just so many parts in there it is bound to happen. And there are just so many different kind of PCs.

And that was one fuckload of a virus, let me tell you.

Were you watching ultra-porn by chance? That shit is illegal unless you are 65.

Adding the option now. :)

I've had my 360 for a little over a year and so far I've had no problems. I hope it stays that way.

Encyclopedia dramatica.

No joke I was fighting that virus for surplus 40+

going through my processes, scanning my drives, doing registry sweeps, going onto forums, using software.

I tried using my other hard drive as a safe haven for my core files, but then that drive was doomed.

At the moment I've reformatted one drive but I've not dared to use my other hard drive yet. In fear that I may have to redownload everything, and trust me on a slower then dial up connection that's a pain in the fucking ass.

So yeah, I technically still have the virus... Trust me... that other hard drive is looking pretty scary at the moment.

*Edit

Oh yeah I'm not annoyed at yeah for forgetting the PC in the options.. Fire Fox just has been pissing me off at the moment...

Fortunatly with my mad skills as a hardware geek I've always managed to revive/repair/rebuild it.

My PC just died recently (currently on my Dad's... thing). It's been into the shop a few too many times for my liking.

No yellow light but my Blu-Ray drive died on me. Replaced it myself for around $110 so not tooooooooo bad.

I recommend fixing it yourself as long as you don't have Parkinson's.

Oh look 1k posts....

Six X360s in 5 months, two PS2s stopped reading discs even after repairs and one Xbox croaked on me.

Grats on the 1k! Happy to have it be my thread.

Thanks for responding directly to my thread. That's what I was thinking, but I am having a hard time acquiring a Heat Gun. Not a common item. They cost about 50 bucks to buy too and I wouldn't have any other use for it. Maybe melting someones face but meh.

I am happy its not the BD laser. Although it is just another thing to worry about if I get my MOBO fixed, that could go bad at any time and there is nothing I could do to prevent it.

PC.

Total burnout. There was a "pop" a flash of light from within the case, and the smell of burned plastic. Then there was silence, as I slowly rose from the chair and my subconscious screamed from the downing realization of what has just happened. Motherboard overloaded...

I had to replace EVERYTHING except for the case. Motherboard, CPU, RAM, Video and Sound cards, Power Supply. All got fried. Fortunately, several places had sales, or special offers I took advantage of. Total Repair Cost: under 700 USD.

EDIT: Oh, and only attempt self-repairs if you absolutely 100% sure that you know what your doing.
Read the tutorial. Nothing I couldn't handle. It doesn't involve soldering or cutting or any sort of thing that I have forgotten from my high school electronics class. Basically take the thing apart and blow dry the processors front and back for about 15 seconds each at 350 degrees. I build computers for friends so I believe I could handle this. I figure if I make it worse and send it ti videogames911.com, they will just replace the motherboard anyway!

So I am 99% sure I can do it. The 1% missing is cause I never did it before and doing new things is always a learning process!
