Um, how is that even possible?

Corrupting a HDD i can easily see happening (easy to fix too, just reformat and re-install), but actually breaking hardware?

Anyways
Unless hardware is put together badly (like the original 360 RRoD thing) the parts most likely to break on any system are the mechanical parts: the HDD and optical drives.

Optical drives in consoles seem a bit more susceptible than PCs, due to the orders-of-magnitude extra usage they get on consoles, vice-versa for PCs.

the only PC/console components i've had break that wasn't a HDD or optical drive is a few power supplies from a bad power surge we got once, but you can't blame that on the hardware...

It somehow turned off the fans and it melted my vid card, my processer failed( not sure how), and some how my Bios broke.

I lost about 350 bucks when that happened.

My 360 has never RROD'd. Well, actually, that's a lie.

My 360's disc tray has been the problem for a long while now. It at first would chew on any old XBOX game, leaving scrapes and scratches everywhere. I sent it in while the warranty worked, and it RROD's while it's being repaired. Hooray!

Now it's been at the local Play-N-Trade for a week now (the technician of this local branch is only payed enough to be in on Wednesdays and Saturdays... FFS.) to get fixed for it not spinning the disc when it's holding a CD unless I'm beating the shit out of it.

My 360 is a launch model, and is hardcore failure. But, it's got character. My PCs... Well, Mom claims I've got a black thumb with the things. xD

My 360 got the RROD after about 2 years, was still under the warranty so that got fixed although since the repairs I swear it's about 3 times louder.

I had a PC die on me before too, the fan on the graphics card had stopped working and was over heating and crashing the PC. (I bought a new fan and thought all was well). Then one day it just wouldn't turn on. I found out the problem eventually after checking everything, when I went to take the graphics card out I couldn't as the whole graphics card had warped and actually cracked the motherboard.

Sounds like the same fix I tried to do with my old 360. Take the machine apart, replace the thermal paste, etc. I wish I'd known about videogame911 back then. But, I don't regret buying an Elite since I love it. :D
I have an Elite. I really hope I get luck with the 360 and not have too many issues. I definitely play my PS3 more. Probably just sending it to videogame911.

When I bought my Xbox 360, I decided to go the super cheap route and get a used one from GameStop, which as you can imagine can be quite a gamble in terms of quality. Well, anyways, I brought the thing home, hooked it up, and low and behold the damn thing gave me an error screen from the start, which stopped showing after a few attempts at restarting the console. Flash forward to less than a month later, and the color becomes screwy while I'm playing a game. I try restarting the 360, but then it doesn't display a picture at all while still outputting sound, which is caused by the graphics chip frying itself to the point of being unusable.
Thankfully, it was less than a month after I bought it, so I was able to exchange that turd for another without using the extended warranty I bought with the first one. The second one I still have today, and it hasn't given me any trouble at all.

I also semi-bricked a Wii trying to downgrade the firmware (I selected the wrong firmware for my region, downgrading to a european firmware instead of a north american firmware), and then further screwed it up by trying to perform a system update which made the console think it was a European console, thus making it impossible to correct the problem. Thankfully, GameStop took it back and replaced it (with me simply claiming that the thing just stopped functioning properly), although this was just after the 30day warranty had expired making me have to buy another extended warranty.

I can't say that I play on my family's PS3 very much. But only because we don't have very many games for it. Just Oblivion, Arkham Asylum, the 2 Uncharted games and Mirror's Edge.

I plan on saving up for Guitar Hero or Rock Band on the PS3 though since it's hooked up to our larger tv.

I have a first-shipment 360. Got it when they first came out, and it was perfectly fine for years, while all my other friends were having problems. Got the RROD just before the 3 year warranty was over, sent it off, and got it back in a few days.

A few years later (yesterday) it crashed on me again, so I went out and bought an Arcade version. My old Xbox and I had a good run, and I'm going to miss the chrome CD tray.

Send it to Sony. 150 bucks, the probably just send me a refurbished system. This worries me because I want the 60gb version and I don't know if they will send me that. I like my backwards compatibility. Also I hear they don't back up your saved data which I would have to do myself using someone's PS3.
I sent my 60GB to Sony to get fixed after the disc drive stopped reading Blu-rays. They gave me the option of getting a refurbished 60GB or a new 80GB (this was before the slim one came out). I went for the 60GB and it's been perfect ever since.

My PC died 4 years ago (hard drive packed up) - it was getting too old to be brought back to life anyway.

Then I borrowed a shit one, and then I was a bought a brand spanking new one.

My brother was playing with a gamecube controller and yanked my Wii right off the shelf. It was really more of a hardware failure due to blunt force trauma.

My brother's 360 died once, my computer has died 5 or 6 times, and after a good 8 years, my PS2 recently passed away. Thankfully they're only $100 now.

Me, I think I've had two MoBos crash on me, but those were easily fixed, and my PC used to BSOD when I played BF2, but fixed that with a new sound driver.

My PC died on me just the other day. Fortunately it was an inexpensive machine and the expensive parts were not the ones that failed on me. I was able to buy a new computer for peanuts and put all my favorite parts into the new one.

My original Xbox had to replaced.

My 360 got RROD, but they fixed it and refreshed the warrenty. Then it got Error 76 and they replaced the entire thing.

Thank God for warranties.
