About a month ago, I picked up Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks at Vintage Stock. I finished the first level, but stopped playing for some reason.
Just last week, I was bored and put it in again. Like I expect from Mortal Kombat, it contained mindless hilarious violence and fun, with plenty of over the top action and characters. However, the story is awful.
That doesn't bother me.
In fact, I think the bad story adds to it. It makes it seem more like an old Japanese action film, or Kill Bill. They're not particularly good, but for some reason you find them fun to watch (unless you don't. I guess it's all in taste.)
I haven't finished it, I'm stuck on the final boss(es). However, I also enjoy the horrible writing. Allow me to explain a hilarious cutscene due to the stupidity of it.
I was playing as Liu Kang, the main character, only because when I played as Scorpion I got pissed at everyone calling him Liu Kang due to the fact that Scorpion was only playable with a cheat code, so the game didn't modify itself much. So, I entered a room, and across a moat was Baraka (Who is pretty much a crazy sadistic mutant who has huge teeth, is always smiling, and has retractable blades in his arms). He was tormenting a civilian by impaling him slowly through the chest with one blade. Upon noticing me, he raised the man with one arm, impaled him with the other arm too, pulled his arm out, and stabbed the guy through the head, upon which he stopped squirming. Baraka then throws the man at my character, when Liu Kang kneels down by the body and says in a completely serious tone: "Are you okay?"
At this point, I had to pause the game so I could laugh at the utter stupidity of those 3 words. It was so out of place and ridiculous that I was having a fit of laughter.
So, honestly, the absolute stupidity of the game's story made what was originally a good action game into an excellent comedy game with plenty of over the top actiony fun.
So, now I ask you, has poor storyline and terrible acting ever improved a game for you?

I don't usually care much for the story. It's the fucking gameplay that matters.

I suppose if the story gains a few plot holes in order to better the gaming experience, Why didn't he just do this simple thing? Because then the super awesome fun level wouldn't have happened, and they wanted to shoehorn it in somewhere because it was so fun. In that situation it would make the game better, but I can't think of any examples...

A bunch of 3D platformers have corny storylines that I find endearing.

Yeah. Bulletstorm.

At least when it isn't trying to get serious.

Story < gameplay.

If you want a good story i suggest you should go read a book.

Typically games by Capcom have the hallmark of bad story but good gameplay. Case point, Dead Rising 2. Can you really take the story seriously when youre ploghing through the horde on a tricycle while wearing a bra?

Gameplay is more important than story, but they're both more important than shiny graphics. But seriously, in this day and age, why the hell can't we have all three? It doesn't have to have a good story, but as long as it has some entertainment value it can make a game much better. I understand why people say gameplay > story, because it's true, people won't play through a game with a good story if it has shit gameplay (case in point, Kane & Lynch: Dead Men).

Anyway, back on topic, I don't really think bad story can add to a game. I mean yes, the Mortal Combat game could have been charming because it seemed so stupid, but imagine how much better the story (and overall experience) would have been if they had written a believable storyline for each of the characters and managed to tie it in with the fights that take place. But in saying that, if you enjoy the plot, then it's not really a bad one is it. It's mediocre and cheesy but that's probably what they were aiming for. Those sorts of plots are good. Bad plots are generally the ones that are thrown over something that doesn't need a plot. Motorstorm Apocalypse, I'm loking at you. Seriously, I would have preferred it without a story...

Eh, I personally think that the story of Serious Sam HD vastly improved the gameplay. I don't think writing a deep and intricate novel could improve the game at all.

Red Alert 3 thrives on its cutscenes amounting to what is essentially a "B"-movie. Just watch the opening cinematic and see for yourself:

The story begins as the Soviets losing horribly to the Allies, so the lieutenant general Cherdenko and his boss, General Krukov travel back in time and kill Albert Einstein, who was the sole reason why the Allies were winning so much. They come back, Cherdenko is now premier of all of the USSR, and the Soviets are kicking ass. But a change in history as large as removing Einstein from existence leads to another enormous military power. Now everyone has to team up to kill the Empire of the Rising Sun!

The terrible lines and basic story gave the first Devil May Cry a lot of its charm.

METAL. GEAR. SOLID. 4.

Not that stupid, really, but just insanely complicated, messed up, distorted, warped and twisty. That just makes it better.

Seriously, fighting an army of cow-robot-frog-tanks with a rail gun while a cyborg ninja and immortal vampire-ninja have a knife-fight on top of a nuclear-equipped-walking-tank adds to the experience like you wouldn't believe.

I REMEMBER seeing that portion of that game on X-Play years ago! xD

By far one of the most memorable moments in all of gaming. If it's over-the-top, hilarious bad then I believe it can contribute to it at times. Much preferable to the depressingly, unpleasant bad I oftentimes find myself dealing with.

Well, here's the thing. I've played games with terrible voice acting, or incredibly silly storylines, (Shaolin Monks is an excellent example) and while they CAN be entertaining, if said games actually had genuinely good storylines, with relatable characters, and great voice acting, they would be better.

So I guess a terrible storyline and voice acting is better than a bland and unimpressive one. But ultimately, I'd rather play one with great voice acting and a really good storyline.
