Halo 2, I had no idea what was going on, but things were bright and noises were made. Actually played 2 and 3 before I played Halo:CE............I'm glad I did.

Halo. My first Halo game was Halo 2 when I was about 12, and naturally the story didn't make any sense to me, so I got the first one as well and then I was hooked.

Oblivion was my first Elder Scrolls game, and Silent Hill 3 was my first (and favorite) Silent Hill game. So yes, it's happened to me.

Also, Dwarf Fortress is technically "Blood of Armok 2" or something like that, but seeing how I'm not sure a first game exists, I don't think it counts.

Not so much video games or movies, but if this counts, music. Many times I find that I will listen to songs by band and enjoy it which usually leads me to looking at their older stuff and enjoying it as well.

Mario, Kirby, Zelda, Metroid, heh, if those even count. They're more like game periodic elements than game series.

Besides that, Half Life 2 got me to play Half Life.

My first Ratchet and Clank game was the 2nd.

Sonic Adventure 2 got me to play the first Sonic Adventure, and subsequently the original three(four? not counting CD) main games, as well as leading to the disappointments of Sonic heroes through Black Knight, and relief of Sonic Generations.

Never played WC III until getting into WoW way back when.

Yeah it's been known to happen. Final Fantasy VII was my first Final Fantasy game, since playing it I've gone back and played I, II, IV, V, VI, VIII, IX, & X. Of those I've played though I could only finish I, VI, and VII.

Also my first Elder Scrolls was Morrorwind, didn't go back and play the previous games though.

Was also first introduced to Warcraft with Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness, or more specifically a demo of it a friend of mine had. When I acquired it for myself I bought it as a box set that came with the original Warcraft. I tried to play it, but man it was terrible by comparison.

GW2 made me go and get GW1 so I could learn the lore and such.

Not sure if that counts but there it is.

I suppose also WoW got me to get wc3.

Hmm, MMOs.

I have yet to play Luigi's mansion 2, but I've recently begun to look for more games to put into my sad small collection of 3DS titles. Since seeing a Demo of Luigi's mansion 2 and scrounging up the money I would need to purchase it in preparation for when it comes out, I decided to burrow the original from a friend and loved it.

My fingers are crossed for the sequel to be good...

I went into Half-Life 2 without any prior knownledge the Half-Life series.

Now, 5 games later it's my favoirte game series by far.

Same with the Battlefield series. I started on BattleField: Bad Company 2 and now I have Bf: 2 and Bf:3

I also started the Dark Forces series on Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast. I've bought the rest of the games but haveing alot of trouble getting through them.

Fallout 2 and Daggerfall are the big two that spring to mind from the gaming world. Aliens (and technically Episode IV) from the film industry. Also Mort got me started on the Discworld books as a kid.

Hm... lets see...

Started the Fallout series with Fallout 2.
Started the Elder Scrolls series with Daggerfall.
Started the Half-Life series with Half-Life 2.
Started the Metal Gear Solid series with MGS3.
Started Timesplitters with Timesplitters 2.
Started Civilization with Alpha Centauri.

I guess GTA III would count, but I never really played it. Or any other GTA games for that matter. I just usually used cheats and went rampaging. GTAIV is the only GTA I've beaten. Mainly because it wasn't much fun to put in a bunch of cheats and become a god.

So yeah, I guess those. Generally I start with the first game, otherwise I just avoid the series because I'm just not that interested. Does happen occasionally though.

Serenity kinda introduced me to Firefly. I didn't know about Firefly until I learned that Serenity was a sequel to the series.
I find anyone who willingly suggests Firefly to someone else and evil and twisted individual who has no soul. I know it wasn't the case with you but I am putting it out there.

OT: Yes way too many to even attempt to list and more than I care to remember. I do watch a lot of originals as well though don't get me wrong just sometimes I see the sequels(or what I could as sequels ie different continuities and spin offs) first.

I cannot play/read/watch a sequel without experiencing the first one(s). It's a huge pet peeve; I just cannot do it.

What about Final Fantasy games? There's a bazillion of those, and I sure as hell didn't play the first one first, but have since gone back and worked my way through a fair few of them. Good times were had!
This. I started at Final Fantasy 10, then went to 7-9, 10-2, and 11. I played about an hour of 6, didn't much care for it. I also played about 10 hours of 13 (and that much was torturous.)

The Metal Gear Solid series. Played 3 and loved it so much I dusted off my ps2 to play the others. Also got to borrow my friends ps3 to play 4. Too bad I started with the best one and the series quality declined from there.
