Recently my friend mentioned to me that the word c*nt isnt what it used to be, we started to ponder if the english language needed a worse swear that could make people shudder and cringe like c*nt used to do. My question is, do you think its lost its edge?
Depends on where you live, and the culture in that area.
Where I live (Australia) the term is used very frequently, and it's not always derogatory. The term "you're a funny ****" for instance is a common affectionate use of the word here. It's also a word that is used a lot more in different countries - England uses it far more than the US - look at how rarely the word '****' turns up in American rap music, most of the classic profanity-laden rap albums of the last 20 years don't see the word '****' used even
once.
Also be aware that many people are trying to reclaim the use of the word '****' as a positive word, in much the same way that gays and lesbians have very successfully reclaimed use of the word 'queer' in a positive context. It used to be a strong word against homosexuals but it's completely lost its sting due to the conscious efforts of the gay and lesbian communities to adopt it as a positive term. Expect to see this same process happen to '****' within a few generations.
I know that the word '****' bothers some women, but I don't care when women call me a 'dick' or a 'cockhead' so I don't really see how that's any different. I think some people just enjoy being offended. The word '****' comes from the Latin 'cunnus', meaning 'vulva', so the word is thousands of years old and was actually never originally a swear word in the first place anyway!
