A lot of games don't age well. Morrowind is no exception. Also, everything Morrowind did, Oblivion did better (IMO). Thus making Morrowing obsolete.
That doesn't pass the straight face test. Almost everything Morrowind did well, Oblivion failed at, while adding some good points of its own.
Maybe, but relativities aside, I dislike both games. But in defense of Morrowind and Oblivion, what kept the games alive are the community mods. At least that is what I believe. But the game itself still aged poorly. Both of them.

It would have aged terribly, but the mods do a wonderful job. I can't even play The Brown scrolls: Brownowind without the graphics mod that makes it less, well, brown. There are a few non-graphics related issues but all in all still a decent game once you get rid of all the brown.

The game was never about the combat, plus, you can find dozens of mods that overhaul combat. I think it's safe to call Morrowind my favorite game ever. There's just an endless amount of stuff to do. Hell, one of my character was a vampire werewolf druglord business-tyrant god king jesus (but everyone is jesus, it's kinda part of the story). The game is about the story, the freedom, and challenge of going from a deported prisoner to the ruler and savior of an entire nation. Combat is more or less just a distraction along the way.

Here's the main source of all Elder Scrolls mods: http://www.tesnexus.com/
I bought it a while ago, and thought that everything was either awesome or acceptable, including the combat. With one exception,.
The walking animation.
It looks like everyone is trying to make their crotch lead the way. Their hips are thrown forward with the rest of them following behind. Monty Python themselves would be impressed.

the world is still stunningly beautiful in its own way. nothing like having giant jellyfish attack you by the light of multiple multicolored moons.

also silt striders!

I beg to differ.

Mods, mods make it all better.
Same as any gamebryo game, really, really unplayable without mods (looking at you, Fallout 3)

Many people probably do. I know plenty of people who love the it in the original style (Vanilla, I think might be the correct term), but it wasn't until I discovered the overhaul pack that I could actually play without it giving me a headache from trying to make out what was going on.

I think it aged quite well. Yeah the combat system is a bit awkward, but that's not due to aging; it's just how the system works. It was as awkward when it just came out as it is now. As for graphics, it takes about 5 minutes to find, download and install mods that make it look much better than Oblivion. It's one of my favourite games ever, and easily the one I have sunk the most hours into.

Graphically I'd say without a doubt. Most reviewers praised the graphics back in the day, now it looks like absolute shit. The combat was always bad, so I won't say that's due to aging.

But otherwise, I don't know. I still play it from time to time and it seems to me that it has more of a following then most other games from 2002. So for a game that's half my age I'd say it's done pretty well.

Yes, definitely.

I'm still in love with it, but the combat is sooooooooooooooobaaaaaaaaaad.

ETA: But with a few mods it almost stands on its feet.

Morrowind's graphics, combat and animations have aged poorly. However, Morrowind was the swan song of creativity in RPGs, which not only aged poorly but developed dementia.

If you want to play Oblivion + Morrowind, play morrowind first. It's good but you can't go back. It goes without saying that it needs a lot of modification too.

I would say that it's aged fairly well. Sure, the combat and magic sucks if you don't mod it, but the graphics aren't too awful. The only things that are really ugly are faces and animations. Other than that, I'd say it's aged fairly well.

If you include mods, then it's aged fantastically.

Morrowind has aged greatly. I think so anyway. When I started playing I picked all the skills I always do, and did what I always did! I think the combat is fine, because it still runs on stats based things instead of just hit detection. Or, ya know, cuz long blade was the only combat skill I ever trained and all I used, so it got to an acceptable level quite fast. I bought it again on steam and I played through all of it (except bloodmoon) and found it thuroghly (I spelt that wrong) enjoyable. And I freaking loved the hell out of Oblivion.

Morrowind will always have a special place my heart that will keep it forever playable.

No other game let me make custom spells that cast both fear and levitate on a target allowing him to sprint into the sky to escape me and plummet to his death when the spell wore off.
I... I've never even though of that before. This requires some extensive testing. *Reaches for his Morrowind case*

OT: IMO, without patches, the game is pretty bad. Its the presence of the mod community that makes Morrowind one of my favourite games.

No, I'm actually playing it right now!

The combat was always bad, it's not like it's bad now and it wasn't before.

As far as the base game goes, yes, it has aged poorly. The blocking mechanism in combat is based on a skill and has a chance of working, the graphics are noticeably chunky, and the other combat mechanics leave something to be desired. While the game lacks a designated compass like the kind in Oblivion or Fallout, (in turn, lacking quest markers in the world, making it easier to complete quests) that's part of the fun of it. Instead of being guided through the game world by the hand, the game makes you earn your victory by actually searching for whatever it is you're looking for. I think Bethesda did beautifully on this game. If I was going to make a sprawling RPG of my own, you bet I'd take a few pages from Morrowind's book.

There are several simple and relatively simple ways to address most of the issues I've mentioned. There are many 3rd party mods available to alter (or in my Morrowind game's case, outright Overhaul) the game's mechanics and graphics to a more detailed design. Look up the Morrowind Graphics Overhaul mod on YouTube and compare it to the original game. you'll see a vast improvement.
