EDIT: Oh, they're not just cosmetic...well there better be another way to get them then or I'm changing my opinion here.
You can craft the Rift weapons. The only difference between the crafted ones and the ones you got through pre-order is that the pre-order ones are of genuine quality [http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Quality#genuine]. Or at least that's how I understood it.
That's really not so bad then, as long as everyone has a shot at the non-cosmetic ones without having to buy separate games. As for hats, well they do nothing so I don't mind them being limited edition items.

As a couple of people have said a vanills aserver would be nice. I wasn't around when TF2 was vanilla but even I think they are going a bit too far with the weaponry and hats. Hats aren't too bad but any weapon should be availabe without having to preorder something.

they are
hell i got the samurai weapon yesterday as a random drop.
ALL ITEMS are in the random drop rotation AND are craftable.
Which is why it is fine at the moment. The only problem they are adding is over saturation at the moment. That doesn't mean in time or in a nother game they might change their mind about this. All I am saying is this could easily be a slippery road.

If by "milking the game" we mean "repeatedly updating it with free, fresh content", then I say, yes, TF2 has gone to far. I also say, GO FARTHER, TF2, YOU'RE DOING GREAT

The part that makes Valve stand out among all game developers for me is that they haven't
If I could just get an auto quote box for everything you've said in this thread that'd be great.

And to the people that don't like new and interesting things, there exist servers than run on vanilla TF2.

edit

The people that claim you have to pay to keep up, or win in TF2 are so far removed from reality that it's stunning.

Waah waah, people calling The Waaahmbulance about free, FREE CONTENT. No paying in anyway shape or form. I don't understand you people. It's making the game more fun, and it lasts longer. What's not to like?

I found it rather difficult to get into TF2 despite really trying... I never did manage to get stuck in to the game. While I don't blame the hats and such, I don't think it helped either.
The game now just sits on my Library asking "You gonna give me another go then"? before me double clicking something else. Maybe I'll try again to enjoy it soon.

So far, all the promotional items that aren't just cosmetic can either be crafted or found through random drops.

Know what my Spy usually runs around with? Invisiwatch, Butterfly Knife and Sapper.
Pyro? Flamethrower, Flare Pistol and Axtinguisher.

I love half these people who wear huge glowing symbols telling me where they're hiding. And their weapons that make them overconfident.

So many of you that play PC games might play TF2 as well. I have noticed a massive amount of tie in items that you get in TF2 if you preorder certain games and it bothers me a great deal. Many won't give a second glance while others will complain, but my question is, has Team Fortress 2 gone over the edge with the collectible hats and weaponry? I am one of those Vanilla players who do enjoy a bit of the updates like the Spy's Poly Count or the Soldier's Direct Hit. But lately its felt very watered down. When will Valve stop updating TF2?

In a way, it's refreshing to see new weaponry added to the game. It keeps it entertaining and challenging. What I do find ridiculous is the reskinning of already existing weapons and sell them as different.

Accesories and headwear(Now all labeled under the name 'Headgear') are slightly getting out of hand. A few hats and/or toupets are cool I guess, but they shouldn't have used it to promote games or events on Steam that much.

Come to think of it, some weapons and headgear are the complete opposite of what the game originally was about; I don't recall the OSX Earbuds existing in the 50's, or the Sun On A Stick even existing at all.

In any case, no, I don't think Valve should stop updating TF2, but they should keep the adding of accesories and hats down to a reasonable amount.

I don't remember the Teleporter Pads of the 50's either.

I stopped playing after the polycount update, each new update always skewed the balance a little but it was at least playable, it all went to hell after polycount though in my opinion, horribly unbalanced. Maybe it's got better since but with the addition of micro-payments as well... Getting my ass kicked by a 12 year old because his mummy and daddy bought him a new shiny overpowered weapon while I barely can afford to buy bread and cheese is not my idea of fun.

As far as the items you get for pre-purchasing a game on Steam, as long as they are either available as world drops, if they are weapons, or have zero affect on game play, I have no problem. And that's why Valve is brilliant. They could have gone all Battlefield Heroes with the Mann Store and stopped specific items from dropping in the world and forced us to craft them or buy them, they didn't. As far as balance, yeah we're still fairly balanced, there's usually a pretty good drawback with every plus a new weapon grants, not always perfect but close. And I love that they are blurring the class lines. Please, bring that on. Don't let the Demoman run around healing people but beyond that go a little nuts. I think it keeps the game fresh. Before TF2 I was a big fan of Day of Defeat but it got stale after about year because I was locked into very specific classes. I don't think we'll ever run into that with TF2.

ehh..it's bloody expensive for the shit they charge just for a stupid fucking hat or gun, seriously, your charging just as much if not more for a hat then you are for the fucking game itself?

some of the weapons and hats are getting extremely annoying on classes that shouldn't have that kind of firepower, but regardless, i still play..

Just give me a sniper rifle to shoot and I'm happy. I don't really care about buying hats and items anyway.

I'm just overwhelmed by the amount of stuff to unlock. Sure its all free, but I kinds of put me off playing the game and going back to the vanilla 360 version.

Each new weapon has advantages and disadvantages. The Soldier's second Rocket Launcher has less splash damage but more overall damage for direct hits. Heavy's newest Minigun slows him to a crawl, making him and easier target, in exchange for more damage. Demoman's new grenade launcher does more damage, but can't only do any damage with direct hits. Scout's new baseball bat replacement is a fricken fish! The new "Genuine" items won't be any different than the regular dropped items except in name. The fact that you can find all the weapons and hats that you can buy in the game just by playing seems to have been lost on people who think it's required to pay for the best stuff. I haven't payed a single cent since I bought the Orange Box, and I still have most of the released weapons and several awesome hats.
