The game that actually kicked off the trend of "realistic" shooter was Counter-Strike, a game produced in the same era that saw games with virtually no single player component at all like Quake 3, a wide assortment of mods for the same, Unreal Tournament and even Turok: Rage Wars (a multiplayer only FPS for the n64).

If the people buy it,the people get it.Simple fact that doesn't take much to think to.There are alternative to realistic shooters though.For crying out loud,Halo is pretty far down that line along with BulletStorm.Do not get mad because a genre is splitting into sub groups,just brace yourself to defend the group that you'd rather play more.
