Simple question. Has Yahtzee's opinions ever influenced you in buying or not buying a new game?

Mine was a close-call. Nearly did not buy Bioshock 2 but in the end i did and i don't regret it....much.

Not at all. I take it as a comedy show, not an actual review series.

He's swayed me to buy certain games mostly because when he likes a game it it must be atleast half decent

I think of ZP as comedy, not a reviewer. He is goddamn funny. But I don't really take his opinions into account, as he is paid to say games suck.

He convinced me to get Saints Row 2 when I saw it in a bargain bin. He also influenced me to buy a ZP T-Shirt.

Yes. I take his advice when considering a game. He might be paid to criticize instead of critique, but most of the points he makes are right o the money.

I was promised a poll!

Not really. Like most people on this thread have said, I too watch him mainly for comic relief rather than to watch an actual game review. Although, one of the major reasons I got Portal when it came out free for a while on Steam was because Yahtzee spoke so highly of it. Well, and it was free. :p

as for his critiques? nope, i make my own mind up based on alot more factors. his series seems to be more of a more honest and insightful take on the games. basically saying what most were already thinking.

But i have been influenced. I occasionally will watch several episodes back to back in order to help spark some inspiration in snappy dialogue in my written works. basically mirroring his meter and rhythm in my head while writing dialogue for certain chars.

kinda... I've always made points that he more or less says in a more cleaver fashion

so I've more or less changed my argues to be more like him then like the "nice guy" that keeps to himself

I still make MY opinions though

And yet there are good number of games he has praised. Calling a game mediocre and calling it horrible isn't the same thing.

That said, I do believe that most of the things he says should be taken with a grain of salt.
Ok, you got me there. But still. A majority of the games he reviews he says sucks. He does like some games, but it is not a good idea to not buy the games he says suck just because he said so. Hell,I liked Spore (to a degree).

He's helped me sum up why I thought Assassins Creed 1 wasn't too good :p That's about it though.

It's changed my view on criticism slightly, and it's given me a bunch of good lines to use on my less internet savvy friends.

I got the demo for deathspank and limbo because of his review.

I then purchased both on their own merits. Same for saints row 2, although I still haven't played it.

Oh yeah, I didn't buy Wet because of his review. Subsequent reviews and friends accounts confirmed what Yahtzee said.

I find that I generally agree with what he says, exept bayonetta, I thought it was way too easy and shit even on the hardest difficulty setting. I also felt embarrassed to be playing it.

It's pretty simple, really. I look at the game he's reviewing, I take an educated guess if he's interested in the game or just baiting fans, and then I see what his criticisms of the game are. If they're things I don't really consider criticisms (I don't like RPGs it's a bunch of inventory faffing and dialogue, I don't like RTS it's all about commanding units) then I see whether he says anything nice about the game like 'it's pretty, it has a good plot, it's easy to get into' and then I weigh that up with what else I've heard about a game and make a decision.

It's such a functional system I use it on EVERY reviewer and review. It'll never catch on though.

Not even a little. I enjoy watching his 'reviews' but I view it more as entertainment value.

Most games that he's really harsh on are games that I've invested money and time into, and have also enjoyed quite a bit.
