Also, does the chicken from Fable 3 count? I cried when it died.
Damn that Chicken was brave.

For me it would actually be this.
The only person I've actually felt emotion for when somethings happened to them in gaming is The Joker.
Ive always preferred villains to heroes and Joker was always my favorite villain. He's a twisted creep with hints of pure genius shining though making it unsure if he is really mad or just pretending. Also while he has no super powers he still poses more of a threat than pretty much any villain Batman battles.
He knows how Batman works and uses that against him. He doesn't even need to learn Batman's identity and given the chance he may turn it down. Hell he does in Arkham City. He has Batman tied up but when Harley wants to take off his mask he refuses because it would "spoil the fun".

When Joker died it was actually moved. It fit him perfectly and I couldn't believed that they actually went through with it. He caused his own death, as Batman would have saved him but his attack made him drop the cure. It was sort of beautiful because he died with a smile on his face and laughing.

Sort of worrying that the only character I cared about was the murderous psychopathic clown.

I've never really played as a character I liked much in a game, nor have I played alongside an NPC I've ever really liked. John Marston was actually a character I hated so much it actually hindered my enjoyment of red dead.

I suppose I quite liked Cole, before they ruined him in infamous 2. I really liked leliana in dragon age 2 as well, but I've never really been "attatched" to a video game character.

Have you played Deadly Premonition? You can't not like Francis York Morgan. For all his weirdness and social disfunctions, he is an immensely likeable character.

Also, pretty much everybody in Nier.

More generally, though, I do care about most characters, so long as the game has good writing. I easily get suckered in; not only by videogames, but also tv shows. If anything, I prefer games where I end up caring about the villain too, because they make sense in some way.

As a result, I tend to take roleplaying in RPGs quite seriously. Not in a killjoy "this is how you're supposed to do it and every other way is wrong" kind of way, but because I enjoy it more when I immerse myself in the game and try to relate to the characters. In RPGs where I don't feel any connection to anybody (eg Fallout 3) I quickly turn into a genocidal asshole and then stop playing.

I know I freaked out when Johnny Gat was impaled.
Out of every character I've ever played, Mr. Gat was the only one I ever really cared about. What about you?
I know it's an old game. Hell you didn't even name the game. But it's still something which should be spoiler tagged.

OT: I agree with you OP. That was pretty great, although the same game got me more when doing the brotherhood missions.

You know, when they drag that guy behind the car, and putting him out of his misery? Wow. Heavy.[/quote]

But yeah, pretty much any good game will make me care.

OH COME ON!

Really?! I don't understand why character deaths don't instantly qualify for spoiler tags?!

Fuck me!

It's really not hard to type [ spoiler] [ /spoiler].

Please.

I know it's an old game, but it's really not as if everyone has time to play all the new games when they come out.

Quite a few. Though the strongest responses have been to Imoen in Baldur's Gate 1 and 2... I was SOOO pissed when she was kidnapped, and so happy when I got her back. Tali's another one, her emotion when you're dealing with her dad's situation makes even a Renegade want to give her a hug... plenty of others, really. Anna from Planescape: Torment. Dawnstar from Jade Empires.

I've cared for almost all the characters in Metal Gear Solid. I know I'm not the only one who shed a tear at the end of MGS4.
I care for most of the characters in MGS and that's why I couldn't play more than half an hour of MGS4. It felt like it was slowly tearing the characters I love to pieces and replacing them with something completely different. I just can't deal with Old Snake or what they did with Meryl and Johnny.
I'm a huge fan of MGS and have bought most of the games multiple times for different systems but I had to draw a line at MGS4.
Thats's just me though.

Let's see.

Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, some of the FF's, Breath of Fire 3, Red Dead Redemption.

I'm not picky.

I really felt betrayed by Kreia.
One of the best relationships in video game history. Extremely depressing ending lol.
