Poll: Have you ever carried a weapon for self defense ?

i don't need weapons, i'm 1,95 tall wear a black long coat and a fedora hat.

I used to have a permit and carried, but at the time I lived in a really bad neighborhood (you would regularly hear gunshots at night, and pizza joints refused to deliver to us), was working two jobs and going to school, and often had to walk home at midnight, or later.

In that situation, I minimized my exposure (try to keep to the sidewalks and lighted areas), and keep my eyes peeled for potential trouble, sure, but it was very comforting to have the option of defending myself with something besides my fists.

Now that I own a home in the heart of white-bread suburbia, I don't feel the need.

I don't think that's an unreasonable attitude to have.

Nope, nor do I see the point.

In the likely situations in which you would need to be armed; being attacked, the attacker will have an advantage on you anyway. If you get mugged by a punk with a gun, he'll already have a gun aimed at you before you can even draw your own weapon. Still trying to get to your own weapon, that is without some serious SWAT-like training, at that point instead of cooperation is plain suicidal.

I bet you're a lot safer with some Krav Magna training than with a knife or pistol, unless you live in a warzone or an area with lots of deadly animals.
