I'm not entirely sure what kind of "lost" you are implying here, but I think I'll vote yes on both.

So far had three cats die on me. Surprisingly the very first one still is with us, while two others came, and died within a few months to pneumonia and cars, respectively.

It's also quite normal for cats to go and disappear for days at a time when it's warm outside. Around here mice, rabbits, and birds are apparently so easy to catch mine is getting so fat he doesn't even want me to feed him half the time.

My grandparents live in quite a rural area, and one time one of their cats (only a year old) didn't come back. We assumed it had died (since animals tend to run away to die quietly on their own), but 3 years later when my sister and I were going for a walk in the bush, he came trotting up to us. He disappeared again, but the same thing happened another 5 years later. The dear thing had gone completely rural. It's been another 6 years, so the same thing could happen again, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

They also recently lost their dear old fox terrier a few months ago. She's getting on to 16 years old, so I'm guessing she's probably gone off to die on her own somewhere.

On a personal level, I lost my childhood cat just a year after we moved house. I found him after two weeks dead in the backyard. I part of me wishes I never found him - his death didn't look peaceful at all. I'm still very sad about it.

Happiness, all around!

Had a hamster who managed to chew through the bottom of her cage and escape into the kitchen, when I found this out spent hours trying to find her but could only hear faint movement from behind a cabinet, after a while even that stopped. assuming the worst I gave up the search, leaving only a pretty bad attempt at a trap if she somehow got out. A few hours later while getting something to eat I turn around to see the little shit, sitting in the middle of the floor just staring at me. Sure she would've had the biggest trollface if hamsters were capable. Sadly she died a few months after that happened. =(
