I'm not entirely sure what kind of "lost" you are implying here, but I think I'll vote yes on both.
So far had three cats die on me. Surprisingly the very first one still is with us, while two others came, and died within a few months to pneumonia and cars, respectively.
It's also quite normal for cats to go and disappear for days at a time when it's warm outside. Around here mice, rabbits, and birds are apparently so easy to catch mine is getting so fat he doesn't even want me to feed him half the time.
