Also, the reason they are so secretive is probably because of what happened with Half Life 2 getting stolen before it was ready.

Not everything is lost, you know. A 4 year development time is good. And you know, it's Valve. They do not disappoint.
I also wanted to add that Portal 2 was announced during one of the PAX's, and seeing that they are working on some portal 2 dlc, and dota 2, there is still hoppe it could be announced this year.

Is it just me, or has anyone noticed that Valve has never released a third sequel to anything (Well, they have never put the number 3 on a game).

I really think that there wont be a number three on a Valve game for quite a while.

Thankfully I only beat Half-Life 2: Episode 2 at the beginning of the year, so I don't have the pain of many others on this thread. I personally still have faith in Valve, but they really need to throw their fans more bones to chew on, even if it's just wildly confusing ARGs.

I just about have given up. The community has had too much time to speculate about what it will be like, so now we all have our own idea of what the game SHOULD be like.

If it ever does come out, I'm expecting it to be sub-par in almost every aspect, to be honest.
Everyone seems to be forgetting that it took six fucking years to make Half-Life 2, during which time 2 expansions were released for the game, in addition to a slew of mods... wait, is this sounding familiar?

So yes, it's taking longer than the first one. Call me naive, but that seems almost like a good thing Half-Life 2 was larger in scope in every way than the first, can you imagine what the third one will be like?

On top of that, Valve is making several metric shit-tons of money from Steam and all their other games, you know they're gonna go all out on their flagship franchise.

Seriously, a massive developer like Valve is A) not going to just abandon it's most famous series for no reason, and B) deliver a shitty game when it's track record with this series is stellar.

Yep. I stopped caring the moment I realized that Assassin's Creed was wrapping up its cliffhangers at a much faster rate while remaining fun and interesting, and that was when I said "Fuck you" to Valve for being pretentious enough to spend this long on something like a fucking FIRST PERSON SHOOTER of all things. Doesn't take six years to make a solid FPS engine. You aim, you PEW PEW PEW with gun/gravity gun, do the occasional puzzle/shitty platforming segment, you continue. I beat all the Half Life 2 games and honestly, they're good shooters, but never, ever 6 years of waiting good.

I'm not really much of a Half-Life fan, but I do think it's really kinda lame on Valve's part to leave that cliffhanger out in the sun, expecting people to still give a shit after 4 years. The worst part is that fanboys actually support this line of thinking. I'm not against a hiatus, ever. But have the decency to end on a note where fans CAN rest easy.

Yeah, I've pretty much forgotten about it but when HL3 comes out I'm sure the interest will come back.

Although I can feel my patience for any news at all wearing thin because of how much I loved the other games I keep telling myself that it is going to be worth the wait. But I know I can't do that for much longer.

Nope.

I'm just moving on with life, playing other games. When it comes out, it comes out. No use getting too worked up over it.
This. Stop being so butthurt guys. The game will come out when it comes out, probably with some new technology as well. Good games take time. Other then DNF(Which was horrible for a great number of reasons), every game that has taken 5+ years to be made has being amazing. Patience is something that has disappeared nowadays.
Too Human? Advent Rising? Golden Sun 3, if you ask certain people? FFXII, if you ask certain people?

You know what happens to gamers who wait such huge fractions of their lives for the next installment? They grow up. They grow jaded. They grow nostalgic.

Having a long dev cycle can mean millions of things. From actually putting OCD levels of meticulous polish, to plain old writer's block, to development hell due to internal conflicts, to extreme indecision where you change gears halfway through development...

I reckon they're building some new awesome engine like they did between HL1 and HL2. Perhaps they're also waiting for new technology that hasnt even been released. If they really wanted to make HL3 using what they already have, it would have been done :/
When it does get round to coming out, they better remake HL1, opposing force, blue shift ... and the rest with the same engine. I'm sure Gabe will make a box set for a few extra bucks anyway xD
Defiantly wont be preordering it due to hype like Portal 2 or Duke Nukem Forever. I've learnt my lesson :|
They have said that they will not be building a new Source engine for years. I forget the link, but if you Google it, you'll see.

They are NOT making another Source engine. They will be using the one they have.

So, NOW what excuse are you going to make for VALVe taking this long?

Episode 3? Yes. Half-Life 3? Not at all.
It was heavily hinted that Valve is done with episodes and will just make a full sequel. And seriously, does anyone who owns a working brain expect to see a four hour episode after four years?

This is going to sound sarcastic but i assure you it isn't.

I think Valve has had this planned all along. They had to wait until the release of portal 2 before they could move the story of half-life along.

This could just be the rantings of a crazed fan but I think that the two games will cross over in a new orange box.

Because it isn't going to be episodic, it is going to be Half life 3. They stopped the episodic content because it was a bad idea, it caused their games to not be the quality they wanted. It took 6 years for Half life 2 to come out after 1, so I expect it to be around the same. If there is still nothing after that, then I will get mad, but there is no need for it now. People jump to conclusions way to fast. Valve have always not released much content about their games, it isn't unusual for them to do that. The last time they did major announcements they had to delay Half life 2 for a year and a half, you want that again?
If VALVe can't stick to the commitments they make, that's their problem. Fans waiting for the third of three announced episodic releases aren't going to be happy when it doesn't come out, and I don't blame them. Maybe VALVe shouldn't promise more than they can deliver.

I hear they've been trying to split apart Portal and Half Life, aside from them being in the same overall universe... so aside from the Borealis, that's unlikely.

... I'm still hoping we find out that Chell's experience with constant near-death situations, psychotic AIs, and (localized) interdimensional travel will make her useful to the G-man, and we see her in whatever the next game is. Especially if we get to take the fight to the Combine, it'd be interesting if it was in very odd dimensions...

(Captcha: heebie-jeebies. Hm....)

There was a Half Life 2 reference as a hidden easter egg in Portal 2. Portal does in fact still take place in the Half Life universe, they talk about Black Mesa in both games. Valve hasn't forgotten, it's definitely coming, probably not for a while though.
