Yeah, I've met plenty of people I originally contacted online. Mostly mountain bikers met on arranged meetings/at riding spots etc.
Pretty much all of them have been fine, a couple turned out to be complete jerks, but no-one's ever been what I would consider a threat.

I don't see any problem with meeting people you know online, I just think it's smart to go with a friend when you do (and get the other person to do the same). Partly on the offchance they're an axe murderer, bt mostly because if you meet, then find you can't stand the sight of each other, no-one gets left on their own in an awkward situation.
Yeah that is a good thought. Let me put it this way, the guy I met, in a normal situation I probably would never have even thought of befriending... But I REALLY wanted to play GoW2 :p. And so as you do I got to know the bloke, and despite the fact that he's a slightly overweight "nerd" for lack of a better term (Former Halo 3 World No.1 for XP or Kills or something) he is actually really cool, like stereotypical "jock" cool... So yeah these things work out i guess.

I have to say, there are a couple of other people I have plans to meet up with at some stage (unfortunately they live in Melbourne) because after this experience, it's proof you can make some really good life long (i would hope) friends over the internet, who chances are you would not have met otherwise.

I wish I could. There are some people that I would really like to meet. Although, some people aren't exactly who they say they are...

A stab vest helps. Well that's my plan for Escapism UK & SmilingKitsune.
I highly doubt anyone on the Escapist is a serial killer/rapist.
I still haven't found a decent excuse to wear it yet...
I could bring a knife and give you a reason to wear it ;)

I met up with a guy I met online about 4-5 years ago last year. We'd been talking/playing games together for ages and thought what the hell, lets meet up. He came to england from holland for a week in the summer holidays and it was really cool to meet up with him. He's probably coming again this year as well. I might go to Escapism UK if I have the money and I honestly don't think theres any problem meeting up with someone you've met online assuming of course that you check they are who they say are before-hand.

Please don't stab me. I bleed.

One of my best friends, whom I consider a brother, I met in the forums for a game many, many years ago. We've only met in person twice since we live five states apart, but we talk usually at least once a week.

I also use to be part of an on-line community which I met up with for a giant week-long lan-party a couple years ago. There were probably sixty of us that showed up throughout the week from all over the world. I was able to stay for the entire duration, and it was awesome meeting all these people I'd been gaming with for so long in real life.

I also met my latest ex on-line and my current fiance on-line.

Don't really plan on meeting anyone new though.

Does knowing someone in real life and then discovering they've created a profile on here count? It's sort of the opposite of the question you're asking, but if that counts, then yes.

Ok, if anyone plans to stab me can we do it near a hospital? And try not to get any of my organs, I may want to use them if I survive.

Lol, no one's going to stab you. Not from our group anyway.

Yeah, I met this guy on IRC that was looking for some pot, so I met up with him and sold him some. He's a nice guy.

I've met alot of people, but that might be because I met them all at [nearly] local internet community, and we all live in the same "province"

You being 17 and him being 20 doesn't sound that bad. Thing is though, did you know that before hand, or find out when you met up? (I'm actually asking, not being condesending)

Met up with a friend of a friend to go wander about once after talking on msn for a bit. Was ok, and since I was already prepared to be a bit freaked out I wasn't so worried

There have been people on forums who I have really wanted to meet. Unfortunately they all live in different countries or the other side of the country.
