The uni degree I've chosen was a total disaster and I was a derelict hobo for quite a while.
Then out of sheer desperation I ended up a security guard, got posted at an office building that was going through massive occupy strikes. Apparently the proprietary security guys that were actually employed by the company liked me and offered me a job and now I'm in one of the highest paid unarmed security departments in the region and am applying for the police.
I'm not saying I'm a bad programmer, one of my portfolio projects was on about the same level of complexity as the shit Zynga puts out, and I did it solo. It's really about how many skills you can comfortably rely on. Not all of them are equally productive or marketable, it's really a question whether one actually enjoys getting paid for putting that particular skillset to use and leaning off of other ones.
And yes, I LOVE wrestling meth addicts. Not sure what it says about my mind state, but I used to pay places to teach me how to fight, now I'm getting paid to do it.
