Have you sold out? Have you given in and abandoned your ideals for personal gain?

Just to kick off, yes, I've sold out in two ways.

1. I work for what you might call an immoral organization. Still, in every other respect, this is something of a dream job, and after eons of searching for work, I was too desperate to say no.

2. Even though I loathe Activision, I still bought Starcraft 2. The day it came out.

Not sure which one is worse...

Well so far not yet.

I said I wouldn't buy another Ubisoft game until they stop their insanely stupid DRM system, and so far I haven't bought anything from them. R.U.S.E. is a good start, but just one game isn't going to cut it.

Which sucks to, because I really want to buy No More Heroes 2 and Red Steel 2. And Assassin's Creed Brotherhood. And the upcoming Beyond Good and Evil remake.

My ideals involve personal gain. The only way I'd sell out would be if I were to go directly against myself.

Hell yes. I stand for nothing and fall for everything, politics be damned.

I don't think I've ever sold out, considering the fact that I really have no ideals to start with. I'm a fairly corrupt person and will pretty much do anything for personal gain if I know I will get away with it.

I've never given up my ideals for anything ever. I hope I can say that in twenty years.

Good on you! At least you'll be able to play it if friends buy it but you have spectacular willpower. People like you need to multiply so Ubisoft will actually get smart.

You could buy used. In that circumstance, the publishers receive no money outside of the original person buying.

Yeah, but that feels like a cheap loophole. I'm committed 100%. I want nothing to do with their products so long as their DRM is attached to anything. Until its removed, I will not waste my time with Ubisoft products by any means. Whether its pirating, buying new, buying used, buying on a console or PC, or anything else.

Deals with the Devil never work out well. That said, I'm not stupid enough to believe that benefiting society at large won't also benefit me.

Despite my personal beliefs, I'm very much in favor of Socialism and, to a certain extent, Communism.

I ranted on Black Ops and always said how much of a clone to MW2 it was...then I went out and bought it and said, "Screw you" to everyone who called my a hypocrite and played it. I stand by my opinions...

PS: If I could gain for others or for myself, I'd gain for myself. IE: I'd sell my soul for some sort of awesome power that allows me to sneak around in locker rooms and steal.

Not to my knowledge... yet.

By the way, I wouldn't consider your (megs1120) 2nd reason to be a sellout point. Sure, Activision regularly sucks enough to warrant hate for it a lot of the time, Blizzard is only linked to Activision via a "parent" company. Blizzard has been, and still is, one of the best video game developers (in my opinion) because they actually put quality and player enjoyment over rushing their games out the door. They also (mostly) operate/manage independently from their parent company so that Kotick doesn't meddle with their system as much as possible (plus, he would have to be ROYALLY RETARDED to mess with basically Activision's golden goose that pulls in so much a month just from WoW). So, long story short, don't feel bad supporting Blizzad; they don't want Kotick around as CEO at least as much as we do.

I don't believe such a thing as 'selling out' even exists, beyond one simple definition. That is, someone who is creative in some way can sell out if they abandon completely their creative ideals and stuff for the sake of making money. My reasoning isn't because I see what people are saying here as pointless, because that's not what I think at all. Rather, I get sick and tired of people misusing the term to describe something they see as bad in something they once liked. For example, my brother used to love the bands Muse and Paramore. However, after their music appeared in the Twilight films he claims they've sold out, purely because they're slightly more popular than they once were. However, Muse were already really popular and Paramore's frontwoman is a Twilight fan anyway. And neither band has changed in terms of creativity and style in any way whatsoever, so they can't be considered sellouts, really. Doesn't stop my brother from hating on them now though, and complaining every time I play one of the songs he used to love so much...

Anyway, to answer the OP, by my definition as stated in this post? No, I've never sold out. And I won't either. I do my creative stuff for the love of being creative, whatever I'm doing, and although I'll happily accept loads of money for being creative I'll never change my style or creative output purely for the sake of making money. I respect my art far too much to ever do that.
