I don't know about the rest of you, but living the last 4 minutes of Hellraiser for all eternity? Not my cup of tea. I'd much rather just be able to enter a state not unlike the total suspension of conscience that one enters when you're sleeping soundly and peacefully, with the added bonus of not having to get up at 7:00 or anytime at all.

I know, I'm weird like that.

[small]Bu seriously, why the HELL would you ever choose eternal torment (or pleasure) over that?!?![/small]

Ummmmmmm... What I said at first is it. Nothingness equals hell.

So if atheists are right, they end up in hell/nothingness. If they're wrong... they end up in hell/nothingness.

Thanks, I thought you were referencing some article or essay that I have not yet bothered to read. I apologize for convincing you so thoroughly of my stupidity.
And upon looking back at your post, i now have a fuller understanding of this discussion than I did even five minutes ago. Thank you for clearing that up.

Nothingness. An eternity of pain, rape, suffering, plague, torture, and other horrible things sounds a lot worse than vanishing and feeling nothing. Hell just seems like a place where you wish you were dead, but you are already dead.

Hell.
At least then I'd know that I affected something in life, rather than just being nothingness.

as I won't be conscious I'd rather not exist anymore then be in hell

what sort of question is that?

I voted for "Hell", only because I stuck to the question and voted for my preference. Given enough time, there is nothing a person won't get used to...
However, if the question had been "what do you think is the most likely place you go to after you die?" I would have certainly voted for "Nothingness".

There's always a chance of escaping Hell. Plus, you can masturbate in Hell. If your a real badass you can try to kill Satan. I'd probably go with Hell, but non-existance is my Hell so it's all the same.

Personally, I'd prefer Hell over complete non existence. In Hell, atleast there would be some kind of life after death and we don't really know for sure what Hell is like. A Nothingness afterlife just scares me shitless even more than Hell does. You won't even know your dead after you die. You're just gone. Completely erased from existence. If you get shot in the head suddenly, you won't even know that it happened. Just...blank.

Of course, this is all in my opinion...

Edit: Crap, this should be in off topic discussion. Any chance an admin could move this?
Well, this is an interesting question...

In Hell, you would be in constant agony but know that you existed/exist. (well, that's the christian definition, but I have my own...)

In nothingness, you would not know you are in nothingness, you would just be gone and in nothingness. That is the definition of nothingness.

Of course, my personal beleifs about Hell are those in the play "No Exit." Look it up, it's really good. Basically, we all have a personal Hell (consisting of one erie, uncomfortable room) and are free to leave, we just don't choose to leave because there are a few other people in the room. We can see the thoughts of living people as long as they are thinking about us. So after a few days in Hell (a few months in real life) we stop seeing the outside world because nobody is thinking of us. So we choose to stay because the only people now aware of our existance are the other people in the room; we stay because we don't want to slip into oblivion.

It is a tough choice. Either a few people know you exist (including you) and you avoid oblivion, or you embrace nothingness and never realize nobody knows you exist (including you).

I choose immortality.

Nothingness.

I know both are terrible fates, but in Hell, your in constant suffering. There is no hope of your pain ending.

In nothingness, at least you arn't in pain. But still that's horrifying too. If wraping your head over nothing is really hard.

But still, I guess not existing is even less painful then constant suffering.

Hell, easily. Atleast being tortured or burned in agony or writhing in your own sins (whatever)....However painful said experience may be to your soul...atleast it gives you something to do for eternity. And I'd rather be occupied badly than bored.

Not existing might be an unsettling thought but the thing in itself is not unpleasant. It?s neither a good nor a bad thing. The closest things to how I imagine it would be going under anaesthetic for an operation, minus the suddenly waking up feeling like crap. I doubt the experience of blacking out and becoming unaware will be quite as pleasant however. I?m not afraid of death but actually dying is probably not too great an experience, minus a few possible ways of it occurring.

Either way I can?t imagine the alternative of hell being preferable. There are far worse things than being dead and hell would be one of them. Even just existing forever, minus the torment of hell, a forever with anything is bound to become a torment. I feel tiered and sick just thinking about such a prospect. I doubt it would really be forever in any case, just an unimaginably long time. Forever is a strange thing, all that can happen will happen with an eternity at hand. Including the eventual end to the pitiable thing I would be by then.

That?s not how not existing works, it seems to be a common mistake.
If it makes you feel better you would not be around for it, being unaware wouldn?t even be the right way to describe it. You simply wouldn?t be in the same way you weren?t before you were born.

Ceasing to exist doesn't scare me at all, I think it's a much easier concept to deal with than Heaven or Hell. and I'm not religious so... Death isnt scary.

The only thing I'm worried about is how I will die. I want it to be quick and painless obviously. But once i'm actually dead I won't even care i'm dead or know i'm dead... Because I wont exist. What's scary about that? I think people who find that scary can't really grasp what it means.

I think I'd rather just be a Christian and go to Heaven myself.

Honestly though, this is an interesting question. I think I would actually rather be in a total void. Hell is one place you do not want to end up after you die.
