Hey! So I'm in a little pickle. I'm looking for a new Sci-Fi RPG to play for PC. Something I can get off Steam. I'll list the things I've played, what I like and what I don't like.

Things I've Played:
-Mass Effect 1-3
-Fallout 1-New Vegas
-SWTOR
-Star Trek Online
-EVE Online
-The Elder Scrolls (all of them even though they aren't sci-fi)
-Dead Space

Things I Like:
-Mass Effect Series- Space age, decent amount of exploration, amazing story line/characters, decent amount of quests/missions,great amount of abilities/level up opportunity, customizability of multiple things. (Things I don't like: It was designed more for console gaming I feel... I think rpg's are way better on PC, but not Mass Effect)
-Fallout Series- You can explore out the wazoo, TONS of quests/missions, Decent amount of different types of weapons. (Things I don't like: limited different armors, everything breaks!, limited ability/level up opportunity)
-Star Trek Online/SWTOR- Stylized, great abilities/level up opportunity, grind and explore out the wazoo (Dislike: MMORPG (I like mmorpgs, but I already have enough of them)so a lack of story line (too much grinding based).
-The Elder Scrolls- Same as Fallout... lots of good but it's not sci-fi (WHICH IS WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR RIGHT NOW)

I've been searching for quite some time now... there just hasn't really been much recently... everything seems to be going FPS on console. Someone needs to really develop a game that mixes Mass Effect and Fallout. If you were to add the positive from both those games into a love child... BOOM! THE RPG WORLD WOULD KNEEL! Ive seen a lot of chatter about the Deux Ex series... didn't really seem to grab my attention.. Watched some gameplay, not interested. I'm looking for something that was developed past 2005 if you catch my drift. I do enjoy the beauty of a game... and system requirements are NOT a problem ;)

Thanks for any and all help. Please be respectful to each other as well as me. We're all nerds here :)

wow that's a real tough one.

I guess you could wait for Elite Dangerous or Star Citizen, those would be pretty good Space Sim RPGs if they live up to the hype.

Wasteland 2 is coming out soon (can get it on early access too.) and it looks to be an interesting spiritual sequel to fallout, partly due to Fallout being a spiritual sequel to the first Wasteland.

You comment on Deus Ex makes me think you didn't check out Deus Ex: Human Revolution, which is also a great game and a modern release.

The Borderlands series are really fun FPS/RPG (well Diablo style RPG) mix that's a blast to play, I especially reccomend Borderlands 2.

Ring Runner is an interesting RPG game that while linear has some interesting gameplay based on Asteroids.

I hope this helps.

Well, it seems odd that you mentioned SWTOR but not SWKOTOR, which is very similar to what your looking for. Perhaps you should check out the two games that preceded the MMO.

The fact that Deadspace is in your list of 'sci-fi rpgs' makes me feel like I want to vomit.

In seriousness though, I've got to say that there really aren't a lot of these games floating around. I did enjoy Deus Ex: Human Revolution, as endorsed by nogitsune above. It does sound like you looked at the original Deus Ex, because this more recent one is definitely not old-looking and the graphics are pretty good. I can barely tell you what happened in the original to any amount, having played it so long ago, when I was little, so I wouldn't say you need to play it in order to 'get' human revolution.

Exactly, I was about to say that. Both Knights of the Old Republic games are just plain great games. Somewhat older games, if you're really a stickler for graphics, but both well worth it.

L-L-Look at you hacker. A p-p-pathetic creature of meat and bone. P-P-Panting and sweating as you run through my corridors-s-s.

I hold out no hope for you if you cannot enjoy the queen of Sci Fi RPGs just because it was made in 1999. If you want to see where the pale imitations Bioshock and Dead Space stole all their best ideas from check out System Shock 2 from either GOG (yes) or Steam (don't do it).

Deus Ex, both the new and the old.

System Shock 2.

Both available from gog.com with updates so they work flawlessly on new machines. They also have a nice forum which you can use for getting info about mods (that mainly update the graphical and resolution part, if you want it standard).¨

These two should satisfy your cravings.

I second (third? fourth?) Deus Ex: Human Revolution.
E.Y.E. Divine Cybermancy? Complicated poorly explained indie sci-fi FPS/RPG with a great setting amazing scope
Shadowrun, Star Wolves?

Not RPGs, but perhaps may tickle the spot for sci-fi based adventure/story/character/customisation advancement
Space Rangers 2
X-Com Enemy Unknown

Old ones
Anachronox
Jagged Alliance 2 (with sci-fi elements switched 'on')

Knights of the old republic makes the most sense if you've played TOR. DX:HR is good. Also keep an eye on Cyberpunk 2077 which is coming out in a bit.

KOTOR 1,2
Wizardry 7,8
The Fall: Last Days of Gaia (not perfect, but it exists)
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (not RPG but has lots of free roaming and world working by itself)
Planescape: Torment (no sci-fi, but far from generic fantasy)
Arcanum (same as PS:T - it's fantasy, but now with steampunk!)
Anachronox (again, not quite RPG, but lots of fun)
Ex Machina (postapocalyptic truck wars - sometimes quite good, sometimes not XD)

Of course, already pointed out System Shock 2 and Deus Ex

I wouldn't classify EVE Online as an RPG... I would have to say Deus Ex (the original then the most recent one - forget the second)

Well this one may be a far cry from the examples you listed but it definitely fits the bill for being Sci-Fi RPG:

Starbound.

The simple retro side-scrolling look of it may be offputting but as a new game just launched in Beta it already shows tons of promise to be an astounding game. You have tiered progression not so much in levels but in gear you can upgrade your character with, an absolutely massive galaxy to explore with procedurally generated planets and alien flora and fauna, and villages, dungeons, and bosses to keep you always entertained. You can also mine for resources and use them to build just about anything you want.

I assumed it would have been obvious that if I've played SWTOR... I've played SWKOTOR... I should have elaborated. Sorry for the confusion.

I guess I didn't mean to throw the Dead Space series out there as an RPG, just elaborating on the Sci-Fi I have played. There are a few elements about it that does catch my fancy such as customizing armor, abilities, and weapons... LOVED creating my own specialized guns!

I took a third look at Deus Ex: Human Revolution... I said originally just Deus Ex (just to shorten things up nice and sweet like)... it did not interest me. I've watched trailers, game play, and read quite a bit on it. I think I might give DEUS EX: Human Revolution a try. I feel what makes a GOOD RPG is being able to talk your way out of a situation by upgrading your speech/personality abilities, being able to shoot to kill by upgrading your weapon use abilities, being able to sneak around a bad situation by upgrading your sneak abilities.. etc! Upon further investigation, DEUS EX seems to have such elements. I guess at first glance it just seemed like a shallow game. BUT we shall see. The best way to find out if you like a game or not is PLAY IT!
BTW to clarify... not all the games I've listed are RPGs... I'm just mentioning some of the games, themes, settings (ETC) that I like. No need to go all, "I know everything about every video games out there" on me. Like I said... be respectful... we're all nerds here. If I mention a non-RPG game... it doesn't necessarily mean I think it is an RPG... it just has elements that attract me to it or that relate very well to RPGs.
Thanks All For The Help!

Well there's Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Hmm, there are not very many sci-fi RPGs lately.

BioShock: Infinite is sort of sci-fi, and I guess there's Final Fantasy XIII but I don't really recommend it unless you want a JRPG.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. did it better.

As was mentione, System Shock 1 and 2, if you're willing to go back a bit in time.

Shadowrun Returns is good as well. Consortium was just released but I haven't gotten round to playing it yet despite backing it on Kickstarter but it looks really interesting.

UPDATE!
So I played Deus Ex: Human Revolution. It was a pretty good game. Not as good as you all made it sound. Just about every person on here said I should play it. I guess my hopes might have been too high. Here are my pros and cons.
Pros:
- Pretty Good Story Line
- Awesome Graphic Effects
- The Augment Idea Was Awesome

Cons:
-Not Enough Side Quests
-Up Until The Last Two-Three Missions, There Were Only About Four Types Of Weapons (yes you could upgrade them, but still wasn't pleasing enough for me i guess)
-The Hacking COULD Be Fun, But It Got Old Having To Hack Into 99.9% Of Everything You Wanted To Get Into (excluding vents, and if you had the automatic hack devices or a but load of the hacking software/aug perks). They Could Have Changed They Way You Had To Hack Into Something Every Once In A While.
-Boss Fights Were WAY To Easy. (all I had to do was use my Typhoon 3-4 times and they were dead... easy and lame...)

OVER ALL: It was a great game. I enjoyed the story line, the characters, the world they threw you into, and the abilities. I would give it a 7 1/2 out of 10.

I have had Consortium in my Steam wishlist for a little while... I think I will check it out... it does look a bit under developed graphics wise (kind of looks childish...) but I like the concept of being on a ship the whole time... I'm a Trekkie so I should at least enjoy that. I'll give an update on how that goes. :)
Thank you all for your impute. I would like to hear some of your pros and cons of DE: HR if you have played it and Consortium if and once you get a chance to try it. :)

Hold on... I just read all about the bug problems in Consortium... maybe I will wait until they patch everything...
