I think the already suggested "Fragmented Sword" sounds utterly awesome, you should go for that one :D.

Edit: Ooh, "Fragmented Edge" sounds even more awesome :D

I voted A Sword Fit For A King

+ Sums it up perfectly
+ Is quite memorable
- not as awesome as Steel Ascension (which is not as unique and memorable in return)

Hello fellow Escapists!

I started my own video game studio and we are a team of 5 developing our first title for XBLIG/Steam. We're having a hard time finding a title for our project.

The game is about a sword that must be enchanted in many ways to become strong enough to be worthy of the King. It isn't focused on the story, the hero doesn't even have a name. It's really more of an exploration game in which there are many different possibilities of sword "builds", much like character builds in RPGs. The goal is simply to start a few different games and check how the different powers combine together and test out the results in a few dungeons.

The game has a working title, which is Swordcraft, and we'd rather not call it that for many reasons. But if it resonates more with our audience than anything else, we might keep it anyway.

So here you go, tell us what you think and if you have a better suggestion, please share it in the comments!
This may help posted a few mins ago :p

I like Steel Ascension becuase it give the idea of moving towards an ideal. Which from the sounds of it is what you game is about.
I have to agree with this here. Steel Ascension really grabbed me and fits what you are doing in the game.

Call it S.W.O.R.D. but don't define the acronym (or initialisation), let the players decide what it means, as it could mean different things to different people.

You could also hide Easter Eggs in the game that could hint at the acronym (or be complete red herrings), for example 5 NPC hermits hidden around the world called Stephen, William, Oliver, Richard and David, or 5 scared animal statues depicting a Snake, a Wolf, an Ocelot, a Raccoon and a Deer.

People love good Easter Egg hunt and theories (even if they don't actually exist). It's like when Peter Molyneux said there was still at least one secret in Fable: TLC that nobody had found yet, people were playing the game for ages trying to find this secret and the message boards were alight with discussion and speculation.

If you manage to get a lot of people discussing and speculating about the true meaning of S.W.O.R.D. on message boards, then you'll sell lots of copies through world of mouth, especially if it's a cheap indy game that people would happily buy just to try and work out the puzzle and be the first person on the internet to "beat" the acronym.

Here's my suggestion: Think of a title, then translate into Japanese and then back into English and use whatever you get. If it's a good game, people will get used to it. Like Metal Gear Solid...

When you do this with "Incomplete Sword" you get "The imperfect sword which is agreeable". I think that has a real nice ring to it.

Steel Ascension could be almost any game. A tank sim. A shitty JRPG. A fighting game with a brass knuckle Fetish, etc.

'A Sword Fit for a King' is the sort of name you want, only it's not a very good name. It's a mouthful. You need some clever wordsmithery to come up with something with similar meaning but less syllables. Like Kingly Sword, if that didn't sound like Heavenly Sword, but worse.

I would say the incomplete sword.

Or if your looking for a play on words ...

My kingdom for a sword.
Which kind of fits with the a sword fit for a king title.

So I made sure to go over to your design team's website and look at the stuff for your game before I tried to make a decision on a game title.

First off, I don't think any of the suggested names work too well.

Swordcraft - Been pointed out enough why not to use this...
SWO: The Incomplete Sword - A pun that is hard to get, and I can bet most people won't get it. Which will lead to people asking, "What does SWO mean?" Going from my preferences, if the title confuses me, I won't get the game.
A Sword Fit for a King - Don't get me wrong, this title is straight forward and tells you what the game is all about, a good title. However it is a little on the long side. Take the game Limbo as an example here. When I hear the word 'limbo' I don't think of the game, I think of that place between heaven and hell, the dark lonely waiting room of the afterlife. Notice the words I underlined there, dark and lonely are the exact feelings the game as a whole tries to convey to you. Now I am not saying you have to go along this train of thought, but if you can find a single word (real word mind you) that can fully convey the feelings someone should have while playing this game, it could make for an AWESOME title.
Steel Ascension - I don't like this title simply because it gives me the idea that the character you are playing as will rise to higher, or better things. I don't feel it conveys the right...mood for the game perse......

Now then with all this in mind we need to try and get a name that fits your game. After looking at the images of the rendered monsters and the background and what not I get the sense that this game has a sort of darky feel to it. If this is true you don't want to throw too many funny things into it because that could ruin the whole dark mood. Meaning a funny title is out of the question. If I see a I funny title, I expect a funny game, and if I am instead met with a dark looking game I feel kind of uninterested because maybe I got it in the first place because I wanted a funny game. With that point in mind you could also say that if you make a funny-ish title, people looking for dark styled games like yours might just skip over it because of the before mentioned prejudice that the title conveys.

One problem you have is that the title is a huge part of the game. The title needs to be something that grabs people, and makes them interested. So you need something that you feel with 100% certain represents everything your game has to offer.

Now on the off chance that I have been reading the game wrong, and it is in fact suppose to be filled (or maybe even laced) with bits and pieces of humor and seriousness, here is a title I would reccommend:
A Sword of Mettle

So ya....that's my $0.65 worth on this, good luck with getting the project finished =D

SWO: The Incomplete Sword = Sounds a little silly and too long.

A Sword fit for a King = Sounds like a really bad pun we're not getting.. or short-story title

Steel Ascension = This one seems to have the most relevance to what your premise is. It's also intriguing and has that "epic" feel to it.

Swordcraft = No. Just no. It sounds like you're just trying to come up with a name that sounds like another game so people will assume they're somehow related and play it.

Wow, that was very thorough. Oh and welcome to the Escapist by the way!

I agree to pretty much everything you said. But there will indeed be a lighter tone for the game than what we've revealed yet shows. Since all we've shown are monsters, it does seem like a dark game, but there will also be lighter tones, especially while in the village, meeting the NPCs that upgrade the sword and give out the quests. And the Sword of Mettle suggestion is a good one :)
