Heroes 3 is the best and anyone who says otherwise is a poopyhead! :p (Heroes 2 is also an acceptable answer)

Seriously, though. The games were in an upward trajectory in the 1-3 period, with each sequel building on the foundation of the previous titles. Heroes 3 is a classic and it still holds up fairly well today.

Then came Heroes 4 and tried a bunch of new stuff. Unfortunately, a lot of the changes were just bad and the game was generally considered a failure. The franchise died down for a while after this and Ubisoft then proceeded to pass it to lesser development studios.

Heroes 5 tried to go back to the roots of the franchise and was a better game than 4, but due to an inexperienced develoer and a low budget, it was rough around the edges, played kinda sluggishly and didn't manage to recapture the essence of the series.

Heroes 6 was done by yet another developer, again a bunch of needless and poorly implemented changes are made, the game is again unpolished and feels cluttered and to add more bad to the pile, Ubisoft has saddled it with some of the more obnoxious DRM in recent history.

What the franchise needs is a competent developer, but that's not going to happen since Ubisoft seems to have decided that it's a B-list franchise and only gives it out to its second rate studios. Sad, really...

I enjoyed Heroes 4. I mean it provided so many excellent ideas

I spent a lot of time on Heroes of Might and Magic II until III came out, which was better in every way. In fact, I still play Heroes 3 on a regular basis with the Wake of The Gods mod.

I just installed Heroes 3 again a couple of days ago, and it's still as good as ever. I've only played 2 and 3, and the third one is better. They're both basically the same, except 3 has more of everything. The only thing I think 3 is missing are the sphinxes from 2. They were so much fun. (They would ask you a riddle and you had to type in the answer. Correct answer would get you some reward, but if you guessed wrong, the sphinx would eat your hero and all of his troops.)

I have the fourth one (it came with the Heroes 3 I bought), but I haven't tried it. Mainly because I've only heard bad things about it.

To be frankly honest, I've loved every one of them 1-5. Three was probably the best, and Wake of Gods makes it all the better, but what some people should know who hate IV is that Wake of Gods added a bunch of the new features from 4 back into 3. I really liked how the heroes could actually fight on the field and die in 4, but the combat was definitely not as crisp as 1-3 (Which were better iterations of the same game/engine). Even 5, once it was fully patched in the Tribes of the East variants, was an excellent game to play.

The best things about the game was how "beer and pretzels" they were. Easy to pick up, hard to master. I got several of my friends interested in PC games using the Heroes series.

Worse? It's getting worse?

I started playing 3 when I was like... 8 or 10 or something. And I must say they have progressed nicely into the 3d era. I'm not sure why you think it got worse though? Perhaps you can elaborate on that a bit more?

I -destroyed- Heroes of Might and Magic V, because I loved it so much. Alotta time went into that. And VI promises even more fun and happiness. I also like the 4 part where heroes can just scamper around beeing a one man army and suches and actually beeing controllable in battle. A refreshing thing to see. 5 was genious in my eyes because of the detail poured into the game.

VI is awesome, just because.... Well... A new faction, for one, the look and feel still cheer me up every time I play it so far and provides enough challenge. I do wonder why sometimes my castles stop supplying new recruits though. Perhaps it's a scenario thing.

Also know that there are two lines of might and magic series. You have the topdown Heroes of Might and Magic, and you have Might and Magic, a first person party based action adventure RPG thingy. I always thought that was odd. Confusing the consumer with nearly identical names.

The problem with Heroes 4 isn't that it changed the gameplay. The problem is that it was unfinished.

Heroes 4 was made when 3DO, the game's publisher, was going bankrupt. As a result, the budget was cut, developers were shifted to other projects, the game was released about half a year before it was finished, and most of the development staff was laid off two weeks after the game's release.

There were a ton of ideas that were not implemented and some of the remnants of those ideas are still in the game. The hero class system was supposed to be a lot more complex and offer more benefits. The town shop was supposed to have an artifact crafting system. The prison was supposed to have other features. Captured heroes were supposed to reveal information on the opponent. There was also supposed to be a system where you could either bribe a captured hero to join you or ransom the hero to your opponent.

Despite Heroes 4's problems, it does have the great writing. You can download the transcripts here:

"Half-Dead" and "A Pirate's Daughter" are the best.

I've sunk untold hours into Heroes III. It was my first real PC game and I still love it to this day. With that said, the later games never really captured me as much as III did. IV was...weird and I admit, I like that LEAST of all of them. V was alright, but it didn't really have the kind of 'magic' III had for me.

I've started playing VI not long ago and it seems to be holding itself up quite nicely so far. I don't mind the resource-system change too much and the huge amount of unit abilities and hero customization more than make up for it. I'll see how long it manages to keep me interested, but so far, it's doing nicely.

I voted III for nostalgia. Honestly, ever since I grew old enough to actually think I never really enjoyed playing HoMaM. Yet I still bought everything up to and including V and sank many hours into each of them.

"Choose your lord"

While I enjoyed three, two gets the vote for having more nostalgia behind it. I remember borrowing this game from my buddy back when you could still do that with PC games and I had to take it back after three days because I was fighting my parents to go to bed so I could play on the family computer, these being the days when most families didn't even have one computer yet, and the internet still ran at kilobytes. Ended up having to borrow it in the summer to finish it up. Simpler times.

I know a played a Might and Magic game as a kid, but I can't remember which one :(

However, I do remember spending a lot of time on it because it was fun and interesting unlike the demo of the new one

edit:

Based on the other comments, the one I played as a kid was probably 3

Finaly a HoMM tread!
I agree that HoMM III was the best game.
However, it felt more right to vote for HoMM V.
Why?
Well, I spent a lot more time with V, played a lot of hotseat with friends and generally had more FUN with that game.
