May I ask why you prefer Episode 1?
Personally, I prefer Episode 2, I loved the early out door sections and I love the Hunters, they bring a lot more fear than any other enemy I can think of.

I'm pretty torn, I replayed HL2 and the episodes recently and while I can totally see why someone would choose Ep2 (longer, more varied settings/setpieces) I just really love City 17 as a setting and the whole uprising scenario.

But didn't a lot of it simply feel reused to you? I enjoyed it, but it did just feel like an expansion pack, I would want to play Episode 1 unless it was directly after HL2, it just can't stand alone for me. Episode 2 however, that's a great game in it's own right.

From a technical stand point EP2 is better.

Having said that I prefer EP1 because it's actually quite different to most other FPS's, for the first third at least you are totally reliant on Alyx for defence. That makes it a lot more atmospheric and probably the only time in a game ever I've thought I could rely on an npc.

I also preferred the urban combat setting, to an extent it felt re-used in that we were in the city again. But it was also nice in that it had continuity (my biggest gripe about Halo, each game sets up a whole new story or premise, then the next game starts at an apparently random point in the future with no mention of the first one's ending), plus you got to explore the city and the citadel in more depth than before.

Plus you got to spend more time exploiting the real uses of the super Grav gun.

Episode 2 for sure. The hunters where epic cos they, well for me at least, made me start shouting at my computer but in a good way, stuff like "take that!" etc.
But i think it was the final fight that done it for me, driving up to a hunter/strider group, running over the first hunter, getting out and shotgunning the next one and taking care of the strider but die because you forgot about the thrid hunter...

I liked the setting of EP1 better, but there was a lot of stuff in Ep2 that was good as well.

Episode 2 just improved on everything of Episode 1: the story progressed much further than in the first expansion and the gameplay was less repetitive. I felt like I was just constantly running from point A to B, shooting everything but never interacting with anything. There was more variety in the second expansion.

Episode 2 has been the high point of the series for me so far. Episode one felt a little bland, with too little story to push it forward. Once you got out of the Citadel at the start, the rest of the game was one long slog to get out of the city, just split up into several different sections of city. Contrast this to Ep:2 where you've got Alex's near-death, delving into the antlion nest, trying to get the car, the copter chase, do I need to go on. You never loose sight of the overall objective, but you always have a smaller objective in sight to guide you along.
On top of this, the combat and enemies are more interesting as well. The hunters are a great new threat and very fun to fight, the big fight setpieces are well thought out (like the fight with two antlion guardians in the thumper-field. That was fantastic), and they go back to having time-outs every so often for the meta-plot to happen (I don't know about you, but my blood turned cold when the G-Man first turned up. Also, Eli's reaction to 'unforeseen consequences' is perfect).
I'm not saying that Ep:1 is a bad game, it's just a bit dull when compared to the ones either side of it.

I prefer Episode 1 personally, because there isn't a vehicle section. I don't like the way the cars and airboat handle in the Half-Life series. Also, there were no hunters, I hate hunters.

that's tough because I thought episode 2 was better put together, the final battle was really annoying and too empty and frustrating. I'd still go with episode 2 though

Neither. I prefer the original Half-Life.
Me too, in spirit, but the wonderful game of yesterday has not aged well.

We can hope black mesa actually does come out this year, though.
