The shape of the chin gets really weird from 7 upwards. Her face becomes almost like the shape of a shield.

And 9 looks like an insect of some sort.

8 is a bit high for me, I can deal with anything below it as long as the art style fits with it. It all really depends on the subject matter surrounding the manga/anime in question. but yeah 8 and above are just too fucking big.

2-4 is my preference, but anything from 1-6 would be tolerable unless the anime was already shocking.

I don't really get the context. But 2 onward starts to look too big for a believable human.

5 was my limit, but older anime goes about that large pretty regularly (Ranma, Macross). Your example from that show reminds me of a woman I know with perpetually dilated pupils because of her many ears of drug use when she was a young teen. I would accept something like 9 if it was used for humorous effect, but there's not a lot of anime I think is genuinely funny (which for me was Shin-Chan and FLCL). Shin-Chan had some crazy artwork, but was easily one of my favorite comedies. Actually, for some reason it reminds me of Panty & Stocking... which had it's moments.

Up to and including 4 is fine, 5 becomes noticable, and 6 is my limit. Past that they become dinner plates.

See the thing about them though was that no part of their body at all was proportionate, like most characters of the show, so it was kind of acceptable.

6 is about my limit, beyond that they just stop looking like humanoid characters at all to me.

Oddly though, I watched Azumanga Daioh with no issues whatsoever, and didn't even realise the eyes were particularly big until seeing it pointed out here. Not sure why that is... Oh, but the specific character you picked out from that picture actually has a reason to look like that. She always appears vacant/braindead because she is actually vacant/braindead.

Which reminds me, every time I saw Powerpuff Girls when I was young I was wondering why the hell their eyes are so huge. They freaked me greatly. That is -not- cute in any way.

7 is my limit (8 or 9 can only work if the anime itself is Super Deformed aka cibli or it's the Powerpuff Girls) since I was barely able to watched the Saber Marionette J series and their eyes were huge!

The face seems to get a lot younger from #4 > #5. I'd call #4 aged somewhere in her teens but #5 suddenly goes into pre-teen looks, so it's my limit.

#7, #8 and #9 are obviously way over-exaggerated for giggles

Honestly...I don't care.

Mostly it depends on what they're trying to accomplish. A serious drama about the ups and downs of being a bounty hunter (Cowboy Bebop)? Probably looking for a 4 at the most. A zany comedy with lots of slap stick shenanigans (Shin Chan)? Do whatever you want.

The wackier you get, the less I care about the aesthetics. The more serious your subject matter, the more it matters to me since it's hard to take a 9 very seriously.

If we are talking animated characters the animation should match the tone. Any effort at being serious is undermined by crazy huge drawn eyes.

For real life, I would not move past a 3. After that we get to alien faces when looking at real people.

6 is too far, and 1 is just creepy. weirdly enough, 5 is probably my favourite though, despite 6 being when i dislike it.

1 and 2 looks good, I can live with 3, 4 starts to look strange and 5 is definently the limit for me X3. I don't really get the huuuge eyes thing.
