it really depends on the overall style, but generally 7 would be my limit. 8 and 9 are just breaking my immersion.

Well, 1 - 4 are fine. 5 is starting to get weird, and 6 - 9 is just...no.

9 is kind of monstrous, actually.

EDIT'd for dumb trailing question that got answered in OP.

I have a big inclination to stick with you on this one... I like anime... but those eyes are just weird! :S Creep me right out!

Ah, much better now.

OT: I'm going to go with the majority here and vote for 6 as my cut-off point, although it can work occasionally (thanks for the example, Scars Unseen). Anything above 6 is an abomination unto the lord though, including the Powerpuff Girls.

Captcha: SILENCE IS GOLDEN. Seeing this just after making a post about the Homer creature is making me a bit uneasy.

I'm not a huge fan of that style so I like 1 the best but it's probably not great if it was an animated series where the artist has to draw it over an over again because flaws would be more noticeable than when it's stylised. 2 and 3 are fine.
It really depends on how well its done and how everything comes together.
6 is where it gets distracting and I doubt I'd like the visuals even if it's well done though it can still be a good show.

..It's part of the comedy of the show... (You'll get used to it... I hope?)
Is the size of that girl's eyes played for laughs? That would be neat.

Regardless, I'll be giving it another shot soon. I can get over most of my stylistic hang-ups if I watch a couple episodes. Madoka Magic made me cringe, but I got use to it at episode 3. Like I said, Azumanga Daioh seems to be the type of show I'd enjoy, so I'm willing to invest some time to get acclimated.
Well, her character, as a whole, is usually played for laughs... The eyes are just indirectly played alongside that fact... (Then again, she is one of my favorite characters in the whole series, so that might just be my biased side secretly telling you to keep giving the show a chance...)

4... Wouldn't want to go any larger than that...

I suppose I could handle 5, but on characters that are designed to be human anything beyond that is just creepy to me...

1 looks gross. 2-6 are fine, 7 obviously gets away with it in exaggerated manga's/anime. 8 and 9 look stupid to me.

once it gets past 3 I dislike it.

I actually really like anime, but I've only seen a couple because moe art styles and the deliberately cute voices from women (even in more serious series) annoy me too much.

6 is where I start getting uncomfortable. But can deal with it. The entire bottom row for me is too big.

I guess I'm just not a big eye kind of person.

Looking at the diagram, at what point do you say "Nope, too big?"

My limit is 6, I also could handle a 7 with an eye-patch. I think it's a surface area thing.
The more insect-like the better. Its perfectly normal to be turned on by cartoons where ladies looks like insects.

This is the most "Praying Mantis-like" facial structure, I've come across.

It's interesting that you mentioned ladies. Some other poster wanted examples of category 1 eyes, but from what I've gathered, only gentlemen seem to get those kinds of eyes.

No offence but it looks like you are a minority as most (including me) put the limit at 6. I guess it's because we are more used to anime; my personal reason is that, as an autistic, it was hard for me to understand body language so the exaggerated eyes helped in that regard.

That does bring up a question, you said that a good chunk of your colleagues like the anime style but you don't. I wonder why some people can like the larger eyes like a 6 while you are getting a bit annoyed at a 3?

Because they like anime style and I don't? Am I missing something here? The diagram isn't really that great of an example, since all of the faces are pretty generic overall.

Apologies, I was just asking what would cause some people to be attracted to the style and others like you to find it annoying/hideous

And you are right, the issue with this is that we need a face to compare it to.

Take Matoi Ryuuko of Kill la Kill

Given the simplistic style of her face and the hyper-stylized art, small eyes would really not work. It would seem too off.

Compare that to Commander Shepherd

If Shepherd's eyes were larger, it would conflict with the general style of Mass Effect.

Ultimately, while some eye sizes are universally too small or large, I would think context in terms of the facial shape and art style is needed before saying which eye size will work though people who do not like anime style work like you would probably steer towards the lower end.

1 and 2 are fine, 3 is kind of irritating but doesn't make me want to vomit, well, perhaps just a little bit of sick in the back of my mouth, everything past that is completely ignorable, it's just cartoon anime garbage to me, but number 3 is just the right mix of realism and animu to create an abomination, something unholy that masquerades as real people. It catches your attention by looking almost acceptable but you just can't get away from the subtle wrongness it exudes. The more I look at it the more I hate it.

In response to your background, Akira, Ghost in the Shell and AD Police are the only animes I could stand.

I actually find the art style of Mass Effect so incredibly uninspired and monotonous, it's like, an active force repelling me from ever playing it. There is absolute zero things that I find interesting to look at with the Commander Shepherd character design, for the same reasons that anime style generally puts me off. Also, your other image isn't loading.

eye size depends on the style of the show/comic mostly
1st row is more for seinen
2nd seems to be standard shounen sizes
3rd row sizes are only acceptable for me if the character is in a chibi style of drawing
