predominantly based on what I felt the community would vote. Unless a confliction would arrise that I felt the developer should win. A good case of my judgment overriding would be SantaMonica studios, just for my affection for fat princess.

I take the last 3 years into consideration, then vote for the associated games I think were best, or the least bad.

I go on how they were this year, and how the coming year looks.
Example:
Nintendo had a great 2010, with new Donkey Kong Country and Mario Galaxy 2. And 2011 looks better with the 3DS, new Kid Icarus, new Zelda and more.(No matter what the Minecraft fanboys say, I will always think Nintendo has a better 2011 coming than Mojang.)

Compare that to Obsidian. New Vegas was a buggy mess, and they have nothing going for them in 2011.

I treat every round like it's the first. Sure, I was pissed that Mojang beat Nintendo. But I won't let spite cause me to vote against Mojang, when Namco clearly had no noticable games in 2010, and none coming in 2011. So I voted Mojang.

I voted based on whose games I've enjoyed the most, or genre preferences when it came to two developers whose games I'd never played. The developer's popularity, legacy, or impact on gaming as a whole was irrelevant to me; I voted for what I personally liked. This is the main reason why both Mojang and Visceral made it until they both got knocked out by Valve on my personal bracket. I knew at the back of my mind that Game Freak would win no matter what, and Nintendo has had a bigger impact on gaming as a whole, but I enjoyed Minecraft and Dead Space 2 more than anything I'd played by either developer, so I voted accordingly.

If it's overall, you might as well have one developer winning again and again. There's nothing interesting in that. I base it simply on what the developer has done this year, and let's face it, a lot of developers have done nothing but shit on the gaming community this year.

What is the point of doing it every year if the same developer is going to keep on winning. Although I based my bracket on who I thought would win, I am voting based on what the developer has done in the last year. Mojang beat Nintendo, Epic and Namco for me because of this, it is just that I have played Minecraft a lot more.

I always try to vote on what they do for the year only because right now the contest only serves as a yearly reminder of what the Escapist heavily prefers (Valve, and PC developers). With some knots in the road like the Zynga fiasco.

If they turned it into more clearly a "best of the year" contest then maybe we could see a bit more variety in the contest. Like this year how Mojang gets so deep because they're making a game catching like wildfire. PC too, bonus points here.

But then the same contest you'll get Valve going deep despite doing nothing this year.
