We all get presents we do not like, sometimes its stuff we have no use for. Sometimes its something you hate and the person buying it should have known better, other times the person thought you would actually like it. Finally there are the ones where the person got you any old crap because they felt they had to get something.

So how do you deal with them, also how would you like to be treated if you got someone a present they didn't like.

If it is clothes I give them away to charity. I figure I probably won't wear them and there are people out there that need extra clothes more than I do. I don't feel guilty about it when I look at it like that.

I smile, say "thank you", then put it somewhere and forget about it.

Random tangent:

I really don't like the tradition of gift-giving. Receiving gifts makes me feel indebted and it's usually something I don't want anyway, so whoever got it for me has basically wasted their money. While I do like giving presents to other people, I never know what to get them. I usually end up either straight out asking them what they want or just getting something hopelessly generic.

I try really hard to shop for people and get them something they can use if not enjoy. For Yule I gave a close pair of friends a plush tribble and a PSN card which (in the case of the former) has become a cat's fuck-buddy and in the later has been added to a virtual wallet. If I have no idea what to grab someone I'm not ashamed to do cash or a gift card.

---

When someone gets me something I don't like, I usually wait until a month or so before I donate it. If I get a kind of candy I dislike from a stocking or whatever then I can usually trade with my siblings. My Dad is the king at getting me useless crap though...there is a reason I provide a list. What the Hell am I supposed to do with the state-quarter collection exactly? Oh and a coupon book for a bunch of shops and restaurants that I either don't shop at, can't afford regularly or, have no interest in...thanks Dad.

...

I'm kind of a bastard, aren't I?

Pretty much lied to that person that I like it but once that person is gone, I just hide the present somewhere in my room. I may not like it but I may have a used for it in the future.

I appreciate that I have something rather than nothing

If I can use it just once in my life, even for 5 seconds after receiving it, then it has been useful to me and has a purpose
I don't see presents to be practical, just traditional. So there really isn't any reason to dislike a gift. Perhaps be confused by one, yes, but not dislike.

"Just smile and waaaaaaaave".

Which is pretty much what I do, I smile, say thank you, and think of another use for the present.

For instance, if it's clothing that I don't like, I either give it to my mum (We're about the same size) or I use it for sewing fabric.

Pretty much what Zhukov said.

We have a cupboard at the top of the stairs full of stuff we've got for Christmas for the past few years we'll never use.

The thing about getting "older" is some family members don't know what to get you so we end up with a lot of stuff we don't want/need.

We didn't get rid of them because you never know, they may come in handy some day.
