For most of my life I was part of a jr. band to a world champion pipeband. Three members of my family are still part of that pipeband. So while most people have heard bagpipes being played at the skill level that produces the sound similar to a cat being strangled, I've had the good fortune to hear top-quality playing. I love 'em.

They're annoying when I'm walking past them in the street, but they supplement folk metal very well, so I have mixed opinions.

In huge numbers, they're an utterly awesome instrument. Take this, for example....

I'd love to see this in person. As someone who's had the pleasure of listening to a full orchestra live (London Philharmonic), the addition of that many pipes must have been something else!

I don't mind the bagpipes. Then again, I've never had to listen to someone play them inside of a building I was in or by someone who's not very good.
Oh, I remember when I was on base and they had the tradition of each Sunday morning having one of the honour guard start at the roof, start playing, and keep playing as he walked down the hall of each floor from one end to the other. All 7, 100 meter long floors. Then when he got to the entrance he'd play for another 15 minutes in front of the building. Usually took a good 45 minutes from start to end. I loved it, but apparently others (including my mother back in her day) hated it.

I think they are the worst thing since Star Wars Episode I. (cit.)

Where is the option: "only outside"?
I certainly agree with that bit, bagpipes are by no means "indoor instruments".
Living in a small town where they had music competitons once a year, where one fanfare corps on one end of the street (easely 20 men with trumpets, drums, flutes, tuba etc) did not manage to make more noise than one (!) man using a bagpipe on the other end of the street.
No wonder it can be used to scare people.

Scottish, and I like them in general. The bastard near me that occasionally plays them early in the morning pisses me right off though.

notes are too shrill with not enough overtones.
not too sure how they are played but player skill may be able to draw out the notes or manage some sort of semi trill to make them appealing but pretty much any music i can think of is just gonna sound better on a flute.

I spent a week working at Edinburgh and there were so many buskers playing bagpipes.

I don't mind them generally but not when they're on every other street corner. XD

Ah Edinburgh. The place that has to be "Tourist Scotland" and not normal Scotland XD

That's not entirely fair. I'm pretty sure people get stabbed in Edinburgh too!

Kidding! Half Scottish here. For the most part, I love the place :)

I like them, but it's one of those instruments who's appeal is very variable depending on the music being played and the skill of the performer.

I can completely understand how people can think bagpipes sound terrible and bagpipe music is dreary, because a lot of it is, especially the more common fare played by mediocre or just serviceable pipers.

On the other hand, in the hands of a talented piper, bagpipes can sound awesome.

Love them, definitely. Sure they can be bad when played badly or when not used in a fitting musical context but that can be said about any instrument.
