I respect them for doing a thankless job. Sure, the odd one can be a rotten apple, but that is the same as any line of work, no point smearing the whole group because of that one.
So, I like the police. I've considered it as a career choice, but it will be a while until I'd do anything about that.

Even if i were to assume that all police are corrupt, which i don't, they'd still be a necessary evil. Most police i've known have been at least decent, if not good, guys. There are some who are total power-mad dicks, though.

I wouldn't exactly call them corrupt in the UK, they don't really possess the intelligence for that. More so I'd call them ineffectual, hardly the sort of thing that inspires confidence.

Police officers have a rather taxing job. Some of the stories I've heard through various people makes me wonder how they keep their sanity at night. Keep in mind they have to put up with ignorant, uninformed human beings at the bottom of the barrel who put their pain and suffering above the safety of others. This is why they are essential.

With that being said, some police officers can and are "bad people" to a certain extent. But within the same token, a good amount of former thieves and criminals became police officers. What better place to operate in preventing what you used to know best?

And for the record, unless it's a 100% case, which it rarely is...I am not for the unjustified complaints towards "police brutality". Some people need to just sit down, shut up, and not get butt-hurt about the fact that someone is telling them what to do or how to behave. Many of times it's the criminal who is doing the crime, whether knowingly or unknowingly, that causes the disturbance/issue in the first place.

AKA: You wouldn't get tazed if you just SAT.THE.HELL.DOWN...and stop flailing the arms as well please. Although it does make for some entertaining internet compilations.

I have deep respect for them because they risk their lives to do a dangerous job for average pay. There may be a few rotten officers but the police force as a whole is good and just about all the officers where I live are awesome people. Don't know how people can hate them just because of a few bad seeds.

I think we'd be in a lot more trouble without them.

And as for the criticism that's ladled out over them - well I'd have to walk a mile in their shoes before I feel I could say anything truthfully insightful, good or otherwise.

Power corrupts. And the popo have power so it corrupts them. Not saying there aren't good cops. But the reason we need cops is a whole other story.

You have to admit, that's your fault, not their's...

As for my view:

Pretty much, word for word, my view on cops. Even the consideration of it as a career choice.

I have respect for the Police. In the UK they are actually forbidden by law to go on strike, so they really do have a thankless job and they can't do anything about crappy pay really (since in the UK they cannot strike).

Huh. Intresting this thread pops up considering that flame war which is going on...

In Britain at least they do a job in which they risk their lives to make sure our country is kept safe. They work hard going through the lowest dregs of society to allow normal people as much of a peacful life as possible. They also do this with little if any support from those people, who often treat them like garbage as they know no better and think it's cool or funny. Knowing damn well that when they are helped or assisted by these officers, they won't be saying fuck all. Because thats the best thing about our police force. No matter how hated they are by the public, they keep going. Sure they don't mess about, and tread on people's toes, but would you rather have no police force? Because I sure as hell wouldn't.

Sum it up, They do a fantastic job which many dislike yet everyone needs. Why wouldn't I support them fully?

I've never met a cop I disliked. Of course every group has bad people.

It's the laws I dislike, not the people stopping you from breaking them.

Not all laws of course, but I think we should scrap the whole system and re-write laws (In my country at least). Too bad that would take a rediculous amount of time and money.

Great response. I feel much the same way - I have friends who are policemen in several countries, and have a lot of respect for the the work they do and the challenges they face.

With this said, I've been a "tattooed long-haired freak" for much of my life, and this means that many people (including most police officers) will stereotype me based on my appearance. I've been hassled by the police without just cause on multiple occasions, and it has made me pretty cynical. A lot of the people who are attracted to a job that gives them a badge and a gun are exactly the LAST people you would want to have either. Not all of them get screened out, and there are certainly bad apples giving the good guys a bad name.

The police are our friends. They do hard work to keep the community in shape, and any praise they get is well deserved. I'm actually trying to join up as soon as I can.

There's some corrupt police (like in everything) but overall we kinda need them IMO, otherwise we'd have the social contract theory being applied and no one would be safe from crime.

I don't get these police-haters. I want to see you live in a state without any kind of law enforcement for a week and then complain that they are giving out tickets for speeding.
