I want to know how other people judge their games. By judge I mean if you were a reviewer and you could only judge a game by one category what would it be.

Personaly mine would be value for money because I like my games to justify the price I payed for it. Thats why I like open world games and rpgs such as Fallout, TES, Minecraft, and recently Terraria, they are really cheap and you get a LOT of playtime depending on how much you are willing to play. I still like short amazing experiences like Portal,Half Life and Amnesia but I enjoy the games mentioned earlier the most. You might thinking that I must love COD then but I dont i just dont feel like repetition should be used to extend your game, I like to play the occasional game of TF2,CS and Battlefield but only in short bursts.

Please post your thoughts below and give reasons and examples that justify your choice.

Considering I am a reviewer, obviously it's best to judge it all together but honestly, I look at things by value a lot of the time.
A game can be quite fun for a while but if it doesn't justify the $60 price tag, it overall suffers on some degree. Sure it can be fun, but if it the game doesn't justify the price (which I honestly think it rarely does) then I'll count that against it.
But there are the select few games that are indeed worth full price. Games like Oblivion where you get literally hundreds of hours of gameplay are obviously worth it and border on perfect in that regard but replay value has a lot to do with it as well.
Take God of War for example. Short game overall. Around 8 - 12 hours but there is a lot of replay value to be had thus making it worth the money.
My thoughts on this anyway :3

Depends what the devs are going for really...

I'll go for Story and Aesthetics as most liked when done well. They don't get points for decent controls you should kinda expect that already.

"Is this fun?"

It transcends all aspects of the game itself and is the reason that a simple browser based flash game could be considered better than a random AAA game.

I use a small but helpful guideline:

Is it fun?

Is it replayable?

Does it last long?

Is it pretty looking?

first off, since it's a video game, the #1 thing is gameplay. I can overlook a terrible story if the game is fun to play.

If it's got a good story, but bad gameplay, then I really dislike it. Especially if the gameplay impedes story progress.

Replayability is also a factor in this. If it's fun the first time, but tedious the second time or in postgame, was it worth the money? (Provided it's not a free game).

Graphics are kind of important, but they really depend on the game itself. Graphics don't matter all the time, but if a game is touting itself to have good graphics, then they ought to live up to it.

Surely the value for money depends on the other factors. It can't be good value for money if it doesn't have the gameplay, the story, the longevity, etc. So judging a game in this category is really judging it in all the others at the same time.

I would say overall package. How the game plays, how does it look, the sounds, the interface, extras, replay-ability, stuff like that.

For me it's the story and the aesthetics.

Although I will say if I'm not having fun then the rest can go straight to hell, but that's only after I bought the game because I thought the story seemed cool and I liked the aesthetics.

So, a combo of all three...?

-Well, "Is this game a sequel?"

-If yes, "Does it resembles at all the prequel?"
+Yes, get expectations from last game and move on to next question.
+No, wonder "why the fuck would they even call this game XXXX number? it's stupid" and move on to next question.

-If not, next question.

-"Is it fun?"
-If so, shut the fuck up and keep playing it for the next 2 weeks, tell your friends how UNBELIEVABLY AWESOME the game and that they should get it and finish it (Unless it's a sandbox, then reach a certain completion range, and quit for a week, then, new playthrough (See Oblivion or Fallout 3))
-If not, and it's a sequel, weep in a corner, curse the devs and move on (See Dragon Age 2)
-If not, and it's not a sequel, yell "What the hell is this shit?", quit, spread bad name (Citation Needed⁽¹⁾)

That pretty much covers all aspects.

⁽¹⁾Maybe Torchlight, but the game itself isn't bad, I just didn't like it. The story is bland and the gameplay isn't that much addictive like I'd like it to be. Graphs are ok, I guess, I don't take that into consideration.

I like a game if i'm having fun. If i'm not having fun, i don't like that game. I use games as a form of escapism, and if it's not being fun to play, its just not cutting it.

I wouldn't be a very good reviewer, since the main thing I judge games on is how much fun I have playing them.

There are many games that objectively have great gameplay, graphics, story etc. which I just don't find fun, while occasionally I've also had a lot of fun with games that have been critically slammed.

I would fail as a reviewer, since I only play games for myself and can't take into account factors that would appeal to or put off other gamers, who are my audience.
