Ahh, Capture the Flag. So simple and yet so compelling. There's been quite a few ways that this mode that combines a team effort with the efforts of lone soldiers to achieve a goal has been done in the past, but there are two different aspects in particular that never seem to gain full dominance over the other. I'm not talking about 1 flag CTF vs 2 flag, but the debate over how the flag is returned and holding weapons as the flag carrier.

Which do you prefer, and why?

Personally I prefer to have a fighting chance as a flag carrier. At the very least with the ability to use the flag itself as a long melee weapon. In the interests of a quick fun match, I also prefer instant flag returning.

EDIT: ALL modes assume the flag will eventually return itself if left untouched. By returning manually I mean instead of touching your flag to return it, you have to carry it all the way back to your base yourself.

I like how Halo does it. Flag carrier is slower, and can't drive vehicles, but can use flag as a melee weapon (2 hit kill - 1 if you get him from behind) and ride as a passenger.

EDIT: To guy below me:
Thanks for correction. I haven't really played Halo in a while, I forgot it was different than normal weapons :p

In halo, a flag melee is always a 1-hit kill, other then that, pretty much what you said.

I also fully support the halo ways

Make the flag carrier defenseless, I say, so they must rely on their teammates. Lack of teamwork (and interest in same) leads to those games in which no one can be fucked actually winning, and just kill each over. I mean, someone always ends up doing it, but it certainly isn't me.

Agreed, Halo carries it well because it encourages teamwork to cover the carrier, or massive quick assaults to grab the flag and drive off quickly. If the carrier can still use weapons, it kinda makes your teammates redundant except for more dakka.

What about in TF2, where the intel carrier can use weapons, and when dropped, the intel returns to the base after 1 minute?

Yeah I think it's a given that the flag should auto return after a minute or so if nobody has touched it.

I'm actually surprised how many prefer to lug their own flag back to base after killing the enemy carrier. I would have thought it more tense if failure was always just a tap of the flag away...

Halo style. Flag carrier has a solid melee.

And you don't return manually or by mere touch. You have to "guard" the flag until it returns to base while staying near it.

MOAR DAKKA is a requirement in any game involving any type of firepower. Why do you think that in the middle ages there used to be hundreds of archers on each side?

I prefer to have the flag carrier be able to use weps, otherwise, who would want to be the flag carrier? You still have to rely on your teamates, either to protect you directly or to make the enemy team think you are coming from the left, when you are really coming from the right. I also prefer an accessable piece of high ground behind each flag, just because sniper rifles are the most precise form of dakka out there.

defenseless for sure, it makes the team part very useful and it requires actual strategy rather than making it just slayer with a flag attached to it.

however i like having it auto return if the team is defending the flag for a good 20-30 seconds, but i hate auto returns, thats kind of dumb, it keeps the game super intense if your flag is 3/4 the way to htere base already.

Flag carrier can wield weapons, dropped flag is returned after a timer runs out.

I'll go option 1. That makes the stakes much higher, and makes it harder to both get a goal and bring things back. Games of CTF like that end up lower scoring, like a soccer game, which I feel makes it feel more accomplished to be on the winning team.

I agree with the others who have mentioned Halo's style.

I also love Gears 2's style in which the flag is actually and NPC who fights back, and you have to down and meatshield the NPC to capture it. Your slower and only can use a pistol and god help you if you drop the NPC and it gets up.
