So i was watching a band interview and the band said they write albums instead of songs that are meant to be listened to as a whole and not just one song. They said too many people just listen to one song on a CD and then put the CD down. That got me thinking. How many people actually just buy a CD for one song?

I for one buy the CD for the band that is putting it out, essentially listening to the whole album through and not just concentrating on one song. But then again I don't listen to the radio and it seems since they overplay certain songs people might hear that one song and buy it only for the one song. Seems pretty pointless that people ignore 90% of a CD, although if you are ignoring the rest of the CD maybe the band didn't make a very good album...

I own around 110 complete albums and I've listened to every one all the way through from start to finish and I feel the richer for it. Of course that's a lot of time and money spent buying then listening so I also feel older and poorer.

I've even endured massively long ones like All Things Must Pass, which is a triple CD album, and Mellon Collie and the infinite sadness. They really took some stamina, I actually needed a refreshment break in the middle of the first one.

I did that once. But then ended up rather liking the whole album.
It was Infinity on High by Fall Out Boy, if you must know.

All the way through when I'm at home, and shuffled when I'm walking. Albums are meant to be experienced as a whole, with one song leading into the next and the whole sending a cohesive message. Of course, some bands don't really do this, but I'll look for meanings anyway. So, I guess it's easy to tell I'm a prog fan. :D

Prog as in between the buried and me? Thats the band I was talking about that I saw being interviewed. And that makes complete sense that they want people to listen to the whole CD if you have listened to Colors.

There are some songs that I listen to piecemeal, but in general I do listen to every single song on an album at least once. That's actually one of my favourite things to do; pick up a new album (or even one I've had for a while) and just sit back and listen to it, not while doing something else or as background noise, but really sit and listen.

Besides respecting the artist, it's really the only way to find your favourite individual songs if said songs haven't been released as singles. B sides can be godly. Of course, there is also always the case where a song may not be mindblowing on it's own, but once taken in the context of the whole album or at least surrounding songs immediately gains in value.

It depends. If I just got a new CD, I always listen to the whole thing first.

After that, I either listen to the song(s) I like best, listen to the whole thing again, or put it in my music library and set the whole list on shuffle, depending on what I feel like doing.

I can only listen to physical CD's which I brought, I don't feel any sort of connection to CD's which I've downloaded. All the downloaded music I have, I (usually) just listen to one or two songs off the album.

Theres a lot of albums which benefit from being listened to in there entirety and right order.

So I generally don't use shuffle.

I used to make the mistake of buying albums based on a song or two I'd heard on the radio/music video channels, but then I discovered that too often the single is not like the rest of the material and I'd be disappointed. Since then, I've either bought albums by bands I trust to be consistently good, listened to them entirely thanks to a friend, or downloaded it first, then bought it if I liked it.

Don't worry, I'm an FOB fanboy too. Along with P!ATD and Paramore. If any hate is to be poured, allow me to share in your fate :)

Anyway, if I'm only going to listen to one or two songs then I refuse to waste money buying the whole album when I can just as easily stick Youtube or Last.fm on my laptop. If I buy an album I'll listen to it all the way through in order a few times, then afterwards just stick it on Repeat and Shuffle together for a few hours. I'm odd like that xD

EDIT: Actually, though I liekd Infinity on High, for the record I thought that Folie a Deux was slightly better :D
