When I first played Pokemon Red, (I think I was five or six at the time.) I had no idea how to catch Pokemon, so I powered my way all the way up to Mt. Moon with only a Charmander which evolved into a Charmeleon along the way.

Now, I like to create a balanced team and level them up equally so they can all take on the Elite Four and the Champion.

For Diamond and White, I did bring over my older Pokemon, but I didn't add them to my main team unless I played Wi-Fi, in which Pokemon like Zekrom were banned from. So I brought my old Luxray to fill up his slot whenever I do play W-Fi.

Use whatever pokemon I happen to find and like. Usually based aesthetically.
Online 'rules' suck.

I'm that one guy who makes his starter a fucking tank and obliterates all of the gyms and the elite four. Then I start training pokemon I find particularly interesting.

During the story I keep a well rounded team between cities and for rival fights, but I always make a special team for the gyms that use 3-4 pokemon with type advantages, filled in with Already strong pokemon that will at least hold their own.

After I beat the game, I explore a bit more before breeding a team for competition.

On one play through in Blue i had a wigglytuff around 20 - 30 levels higher than everything and just one shot everything with mega punch.

Other than that I generally have a varied team.

I went through all of those, I like to mix it up and try different things. First time I played Silver all I used was my uber strong starter. Then I played Yellow I made a balanced team and trained everyone equally (well besides the fact my starter is always 5 levels above everyone else, it's a habit). SoulSilver I caught them all. It was a lot of work and 300 hours but I fucking caught them all. Now in Black I'm breeding to make a competitive team.

For single player, I get a lot of walls, because I play set style so I need things that can take hits. I always have a full 6 man team by the time I get to the Elite 4.

For metagame, I have a varied mix of good Pokemon.

Thank to that Pokemon Marriland Team Builder my team is base from that build so I carry a mix team with no 3 or more weakness type.
While my party Pokemon used to be base from any Pokemon I had caught but lately I got obseess with the nature stats and EV (but not that much). My rule is any of my party Pokemon must be level 15 or lower for me to use them. If they are higher, I would breed them out (preferable with a breeder only move). Thank to this in White excluding my starter Pokemon my other five Pokemon members were all hatch from the eggs.

In the ones before the big black/white change to exp.

Start with the water type starter (cos it's cool :p, and blastoise is awesome)
Focus on leveling my starter and the first flying type I can catch the other 4 pokemon will be sacrificial ones to buy me time to revive and heal my main two
Expand my leveled pokemon to include a psychic-type glass cannon and a Dragon type murder machine.
Last two slots are legendaries for the elite four.
First time I ever completed blue my team was:
Blastoise (named Bowser :D)
Kingler
Alakazam
Gengar
Dragonair/nite
Articuno

Now with the exp changes I have a pretty even team, I'm on victory road omw to the elite 4:
Samurott
Darmanitan (non-Zen)
Gothitelle
Haxorus
Minipete
I'm still determining the last pokemon, whether to use a legendary or my Sawk.

My styles basically just trying to one shot everything, Darmanitan's Belly Drum makes this pretty easy.

Every game I've played since Red/Blue I've done my best to get an ALL EEVEE team.

I raise about 10 Pokemon that I have deemed as worthy, and alternate them out through my party, depending on which friend I'm battling against. I'm also heavily into EV and IV training.

Well, my old strategy was to catch as many pokemon as possible, and continually switch in new pokes.
This failed, repeatedly, as I would get to a gym to find the leader had pokes that were easily twice my level.
So now I choose six, with a mix of types, and breeze on through the story.
Then I focus on EV training and natures, afterward.

I've never been much of a collector. My goal in any Pokemon game is essentially to create the Spetsnaz of Pokemon teams. A team of six. Perfectly diverse. Viciously efficient, and a super-effective move for every situation.

I haven't played Pokemon in ages, but back in the day I remember that I used to mostly stick with my early catches. So I'd wind up with a team of super hard, but kind of generic Pokemon, since I never really enjoyed grinding any alternates. But if a certain Pokemon caught my eye, say, Scyther, I'm stop at nothing to catch that sucker and level them up until they could join my main team. So with my drive to get the most amusing Pokemon and my lack of interest in levelling Pokemon I didn't use often I'd always wind up with a moderately impressive, varied library of low level Pokemon.

Hello there fellow Escapists!

Just a quick question, how do you play pokemon?
I go around the world, enslave small animals by shoving them into balls, and go around and fight with them

In all honesty, I have the same team, Dragon/Flying, Water/Ground, Fire, Grass, Rock/Ground, Ghost/Dark

Catch a decent selection. Pick 6 and go through with them. If something new comes along later (a legendary or something like that) relegate one of them and use the others to get the new guy up to speed, using the good old start and switch.

When playing through I usually build up 2-3 different pokemon of varying types so I have good type-coverage for the gyms. I usually train up a Fire, a Water, and one other pokemon (Electric or Psychic usually).

After the game is done, I'm all about the Battle Tower. Weavile/Starmie/Scizor ftw!
