So, I was thinking recently (I do this from time to time), sparked by the last episode I watched of Zero Punctuation's L.A. Noire "review". How much do you all use "professional" reviews to guide your game purchases? What sites do you frequent that you seem to get the most accurate info from?

I've read about a lot of Escapists that use Yahtzee's game videos as a review, of sorts, and condemn a game based on what he says. I see him as more a game commentator. Even the games he likes, he points out the flaws and whatnot, and he is really accurate at pointing out things I thought were odd too. I never see it as a "review" however, more along the lines of listening to a game designer and gamer talking about funny things that occur in titles he covers. And following this line of thought, I've never disagreed with what he's said.

Now, for my answers to the questions I posed above. I generally don't use review scores to dictate my purchases, I prefer user reviews and word of mouth myself. Or Let's Plays and the like to give me an idea of the gameplay. I rarely ever look at the scores until after I have the game, just to see what other people thought of it. And it's served me well so far, I've never made a purchase I flat out regretted before. One site that I put a lot of faith into though, when I am on the fence, is Giant Bomb. When they do review stuff, they seem to generally have the same thought patterns as I do, and their Quick Looks are invaluable for seeing how a game is and plays before making purchases.

I usually watch them to see the game in action. Get a few opinions on it and then decide to get it or not. Reviewers are people too and I would never put my trust on them alone.

As for the ZP reviews. I watch them mainly for laughs. But when he points out flaws I am at times fully agreeing and on other occasions I had totally overlooked the flaw mentioned.

I ususally check the sites/reviewers i know have been good to me in the past, but it's important to see what part of the game they're actually criticising and how much that matters to you. Good reviewers in my mind should be able to convey the game in an objective manner and compare its elements to those of other well-known titles.

Also, Yahtzee is an entertainer above all else. He can spend 2 minutes bashing things you wouldn't even notice (but he sometimes brings good points to the table)

"professional" reviews...
"professional"... Ha ha, good one. I like how you used the quotation mark there.

Professionals are usually biased based on how early they get the game from the developers.
Users are either whiners or fan boys, giving a game an incredibly low or insanely high score.

Okay okay, I am exaggerating here... "somewhat".

I don't like game reviewers much. I watch Zero Punctuation to learn of the game flaws and I watch gametrailers.com because they show an 6-8min movie of how the game(play) looks. But in the end I will not take a reviewers word for it as I mostly tend to disagree on reviews and professionals are way to easy with giving high scores for a game.

I agree about Yahtzee, but I've seen a lot of people base purchases off things he dislikes. The L.A. Noire one just got meshed really well since he put a funny spin on things that I noticed myself. I've always seen him as an entertainer, who brings up amusing points on flaws I both notice and don't.

But see, a lot of official review sites do the same thing as well though. Pad scores on high budget games and lower not so high budget ones. At least the user ones (the ones that review in length, not just drop a score and be done with it), compare to other titles, and rate the experience in general, from what I've seen.

Like I said though, for on the fence purchases, Giant Bomb is the most casual view on games I can find that is pretty reliable. Their Quick Looks are awesome.

I would never recomend using zero punctuations reviews they are purely for laughs he never gives any good feedback ever so its a terrible place to see the good and bads of a game to make a informed dicision on a side note this is why I dont understand why people get upset when he gives bad reviews, thats all he does what were they expecting

I really only make my own decisions about a game before buying it. I don't trust word of mouth after the Dragon Age 2 fiasco. If I hadn't pre-ordered on good faith and waited for the insanely unfair shake that DA2 got on Metacritic from regular people, I probably wouldn't have got it and would have missed out on one of the best games of this year. Luckily I did pre-order instead of waited.

Though I also way my decision with professional reviews, and that is where the Escapist comes in, which gave a proper review of DA2 which if I combined with Metacritic users, I would have noticed something was a miss and bought the game because it usually the professional that is right is such situations, because the reviewers on Metacritic were just fanatical people that didn't give reasoned reviews, they let problems that should only take off only 1 or 2 points off a score, but took off half or all points.

So right now with how many of my fellow gamers are when it comes to rating games, sorry, I can't trust you. You don't think rationally.

Yeah, I'm pretty much your line of thinking, as in 'not much' would be my answer to your question.

While I believe Yahtzee to be more qualified than most of the other ravers who claim to be 'professionals', there are times when I'm left wondering 'gee, I still don't know enough to fully agree/disagree' although there are times when I wasn't intending on buying a game anyway, where he re-affirms my preconceptions, and occassionally the reverse as well.

I think other reviewers, since they aren't limited by a 5 minute ramble, understandably do a better job of total game description, yet they some how stamp an virtually arbitrary number I rarely agree with. Numbers should be left to users.

What's great about Yahtzee's reviews, regardless of whether you love or hate the game, you still laugh with him about all the flaws he finds.
If you've already played the game, they're even better, since he does game specific 'in-jokes', that are funnier to people in the know of the game.

On the subject of LA Noire, Yahtzee was right on the money. I'm extremely pleased, I didn't spend my money on it. I borrowed from a friend, then played the game, found heaps of things I didn't like about it, and Yahtzee talked about virtually all of them, which made that review especailly enjoyable to myself, I only wished my friend saw the video first before just buying the thing.

So I don't put much stock in them, and prefer user reviews for those reasons.

EDIT: Ah, the second question, well that'd be Game Trailers actually, wish I could find more reviews easily on this site though.

I think it depends on the game. You can't rely on metacritic to tell you if a Total War game is any good, for instance, but it's usually a pretty good guideline.

I know I'm getting certain games. I use reviews to help me decide on borderline purchases. The reason I didn't buy Brink.

I only ever watch/read reviews (other than ZP) if I'm on the border with a game other than that I don't really read that many reviews. That said I don't understand when people get so butthurt about a bad review if they already bought the game and like it, after you buy it and you like it why are you watching the review and what's it matter that reviewer A doesn't like it IE. the Witcher 2 fiasco that had everyone up in arms over a 6/10 score.

Basically I only watch reviews if I'm on the border and I don't watch reviews for games I already have since my opinion is the only one that matters.

If I'm interested in a game, I'll go out and buy it regardless of whether IGN gave it a 6.1.

I watch them for the entertainment; they can be educational too.
But normally a review won't sway me either way.

I tend to base my oppinions on what I see of the game pre-release, if I'm not instantly inthralled by the game I'll wait a week or two after the release, by that time one of my friends has probably bought it and I can see it first hand.

Reviews are somewhat useless in my opinion, as my opinion on a game will probably be different to the reviewers, but I do watch video reviews as a way to see how the game looks, sounds, how good the art direction is, stuff like that.

I use 'professional' reviews more to learn about a game rather than to see if it's good or not. That I leave to my own judgement, usually. If the game doesn't interest me in the first place, then I'll know whether or not to bother with it. That's probably because I tend not to get caught up too much in hype and news about games coming up, and only start to do my homework when a game is just about to come out, or already is out. I just keep a list of games and release dates to check out when the time comes closer.

I only watch ZP for laughs, not to base any buying decisions on, and also to see the insight of a guy who sees funny things about games. I lost faith in 'professional' game reviews a long time ago, probly since the GameSpot/Jeff Gerstman (I think that's his name) Kane & Lynch debacle, which I won't get into now unless the situation calls for it.

I try to be careful on reviews. Some people like some genres, will play some types, and hate others. So a person that normally plays FPS's might like FPS's but hate flight sims. Some will jump and scream about little stuff that can easily be forgiven.

Examples:
With Yahtzee on Farcry 2 I 100% agree. Others gave it a glowing review so i tried it. I'm pissed that I paid time and money for that game. With Borderlands I disagree. Yeah, he was right on the points he made, but they weren't game breakers to me.

Many complained about the driving in Mass Effect. It's possible that so many did so that they removed it from ME2 and gave us that crap mining mini game thing. Why was the vehicle difficult to drive? Was it because they didn't know how to make a vehicle? No, it might have handled too well though. It handled like a tank, a 6 wheel tank. At the end it handled like a 6 wheel tank in low gravity. I can appreciate this.

A while back I read a review on an MI-24 game. They talked about how realistic it was and how much data they pulled from pilots and they actual aircraft. The real thing is slightly sluggish as it weighs 10 tons. The real thing likes to try to veer to one side. The sim replicated this. How much it does so depends on the speed of the helicopter. The next review tore the game apart on this saying that no matter what they did they couldn't get their joystick calibrated right and that the thing handled like it was overly heavy. Huh...

It's not just vehicle simulation that I see this in either. The last two were just some of the first to come to mind.

Really what I'm getting at is that I put little faith into any single review. I try to take an average of all of them.

If I'm unsure about a game, then I'll check out some sites I frequent and see the reviews, both positive and negative. If a friend has it, then I'll ask their opinion. Checking the forums on The Escapist can also help.

I don't trust scores, I trust reason. I have been able to agree with Yahtzee's arguments on pretty much every game (never had my horse stick in a wall in RDR, though), but even games he tore a strip off of I can find fun and well worth my money.

Angry Joe is who I go to for positive reviews of a game (If he says they're bad, they're usually REALLY bad.), but I'll balance it out with a negative review and weigh my options.

Also I would recommend you find a reviewer who has similar tastes in games to you, as there is no game made for everyone.
