I don't know how much discussion value this thread will have to offer, but I've always found it humorous that a lot of different people I've met, or at least played with, have different pronunciations of the word "Melee".

So let's take this issue to the polls, Escapists! Now, this is not an objective discussion on how the word Melee IS pronounced because I'm sure a quick dictionary search would clear that up, not to mention it would be no fun. Rather, I am asking how YOU tend to pronounce the word since numerous variations seem to be acceptable.

Personally, I tend to use option 2, "Meh-Lay".

May-lay is the only way I really know how to say it. Anything else just sounds 'off' to me.

It switches. It's may-lay or mee-lee. Usually may-lay.
Hit the nail on the head. I do that same thing. I used to always say it mee-lee, then I heard it was may-lay, and now I switch between the two if I'm not paying attention.

I am fully aware that it's pronounced 'May-Lay' or 'Meh-Lay', but I read it before I heard it, and I'd been saying 'Mee-Lee' for years before someone corrected me.

So it is irreconcilably 'Mee-Lee' for me, and I usually say it that way out of habit.

I use "mee-lay" for the sub-par Smash Bros. game, and "meh-lay" for the form of combat.

Yeah, I prefer Brawl, what're you gonna do about it? Whine on the internet?

Meh-lay, I didn't know people said it any other way. Which according to some quick findings is the correct way, in English at least, has French origins and that's the official way of saying it.

I pronounce it 'MEH-ley', though I know that's incorrect (with respect to fidelity to the French root).

In French, it's spelt 'mêlée', which is pronounced 'mey-le'h', from the verb 'to mix'. Go figure...

Comes from the French mêler:
http://www.french-linguistics.co.uk/dictionary/meler.html

The way I prounce it in French is may-lé
The way I pronounce it in English is either may-ley with equal emphasis or meh-lay with emphasis on the second syllable.

Given my Canadian accent I prefer the former because the latter sometimes sounds like I'm describing something that comes from Malaysia.
