It started out as 'Twat' then shifted to 'Twhat'. But now it's shifted back and is more commonly pronounced 'Twat' these days (in part thanks to Gordon Ramsey being accepted into US culture through Hell's Kitchen and other programmes). I still use Twot (Twhat) though, if at all. Twat doesn't have the same effect with my country's vowel accents.

My buddy always sounded stupid when he made it sound like hot so I always make it rhyme with hat.

Like the dictionary says, with an "ah" sound, rhymes with hot.
The "Ah" in hot?

Am I just missing something completely here?

All American dictionaries.

Shows clearly it's 'at'.

I say it like tee-wat.
And now I've said it to myself a few times, it doesn't sound like a word anymore.

I didn't think americans even used the word at all, figured it was one of our lovely english words that confuse the international audience in our few tv shows to jump the pond. but in england at least, it rhymes with hat. say it any other way and people will certainly think you mean something completely different

I've heard it pronounced both ways, and it use it both ways.

When I usually hear it said and it rhymes with "hot," the word is used as a slang for female genitalia. (EDIT: I'm from the southern United States, and to my understanding, this is a predominantly southern slang.)

On the other hand, it rhymes with "hat" if I'm talking about a stupid person. For me, if it rhymes with "hat," it's more or less a synonym for "twit."

Twa' or something like that.
Or twah.

Damn Scottish people affecting my already British accent, making me say things like wa'er n' stuff.
[SUB]And I love them for it, because that has earned me a top grade in English :3[/SUB]

People pronounce it 'twot'?

What the hell is wrong with you?!

Also... people say it outside the UK? That's surprising.

Well exactly how it's spelled. TWAT as in Hat. Not twot like some people are saying. Never heard anyone ever pronounce it twot.

Well it's spelled 't.w.a.t' so I pronounce it as such. I would only pronounce it to rhyme with 'hot' if it was spelled 't.w.o.t'.

Ever since I've been able to talk I've had this strange compulsion to pronounce words how they're spelled, it's weird.
Its too bad the english language has two or more legal pronunciations for each vowel. For instance, smarmy-pants, you typed 'talk'. How do you pronounce that, pray tell? :)

Ooh, snap!

OT: Tw@. It's what the large majority of people say, and this thread has evidently proven it. (But yeah yeah, it's right either way.)

I'm only posting because Mr.Weeds here got him real good ;3

look at the word... T.W.A.T

thats how i pronounce it, how its spelled.
You also, please revise your pronounciation of "Talk." If you dare utter it "Tall-k(a)", then you're a massive hypocrite, or an idiot.

You are quite correct, in English each letter has a 'hard' and 'soft' pronunciation. But neither pronunciation of 'a' sounds like either pronunciation of 'o', so I shall continue to be as smarmy as I like! :)
