The Escapist occurs to me, unlike many sites I'm familiar with, to have a rigid stance against piracy in all its forms. In a way, this is a very good thing. Upstanding citzens paying for their wares and whatnot.

However, through the ingenius anomisity of the poll function, I how far people truelly indulge, or believe people should indulge in the Games Industries "biggest enemy". Outlined below are some options, listend in order of severity. Simply pick the one you most agree with, or fits with you.

A) Piracy is never an option. If you have Bittorrent on your computer, you should be put in the stocks.

B) If you already own the game, and it becomes faulty or unusable, it is OK to download a back up in order to continue usage.

C) If a game is so old or rare, it is near impossible to find, it is OK to download a ROM/ISO in order to play it, without owning the console/original game

D) You previously traded in/ sold the game a certain amount of time ago, but wish to play it again.

E) You wish to try out a game before you buy it, so as to ensure its quality, or make sure it runs on your system. It will be deleted once a decision is made.

F) Same as E) but if you don't warrent it worthy of spending cash on, you'll keep it and finish it regardless

G) You rarely/never buy games. If it's free somewhere, you'll download it and play it.

It is assumed if you agree with D, you will also agree with C, B and A and so forth.

Pirating is called that for a reason. One with a concience will know right from wrong. I personally just suffer 'till the old games I want to play are made available, and if someone honestly tries a game, then buys it...
Well, I really don't like when people do that, because most people can't control themselves and will just take advantage of a game, or wait 'till there's a price drop before buying a lisence.
I avoid piracy, personally, but I know I can't control the actions of others. I just hope people with the means to do so will support a game they enjoy.

My thoughts exactly.

I don't understand the piracy-crusaders, as I like to call them. They go on and on about the copyrights, but then when a game like Demigod, which has no DRM whatsoever, is released, they pirate it heavily.

It's one thing to admit openly you're too cheap to pay for entertainment, but to try to hide that fact by pretending you fight for a cause, I cannot respect that.

Correct.

I have also deleted the posts where the user admitted to having done an illegal action to protect them.

Please comment ABOUT the illegal action, but DO NOT admit doing an illegal action on these forums.

About A - Bittorent doesn't necessecarily involve piracy, I started using it because it's the most popular way of distributing free music.
examples of free music

Also if someone wants some new not-mainstream music, you can download it at jamendo.
You can download everything free(about 19000 albums for now), and it's perfectly legal, artist themselves encourage sharing.

I would download games that I have no intention of buying, but most of the time, I'll just buy the game, I like having legit versions of my favourite games, its not very expensive after all.

The entire debate is hypocritical. People will rant and rave over movies, music, and games but won't even shrug when it comes to literature, pictures, and art.

If you're against piracy, ask yourself to what extent. If you're against it all, then great, you're not a hypocrite. If you're against some of it, then great, you're a hypocrite. If you're for all of it, then great, you're not a hypocrite.

I don't think a single person on this forum is against or for all forms of piracy because you don't view certain mediums as important enough to warrant the criminalization of such acts.

I also find it only slightly hypocritical how people will rant and rave about how piracy is ruining the gaming industry and then they'll go out to Gamestop, sell off their used games, and buy a bunch more used games and repeat this process again and again and again not stopping to think for a moment that those ARE actual lost sales.

It's a fairly laugh worthy double standard. People think they are justified in their actions because they payed for it while complaining to people about how those SCOUNDREL PC gamers are ruining gaming by pirating! For shame! How could they do such a thing?

Except all piracy on the PC has done has moved terrible game developers away from the PC to consoles. Now you guys get to put up with the plethora of shovelware that we've had to suffer through for ages! Yay for you!

I agree with C. The only people missing out on money when a piece of abandonware is pirated are people selling that particular game second-hand on an internet auction, and they will always manage to sell that game anyway if it's popular or has a cult status. I also don't see many objections against pirating games that will never be released in your region anyway (like Mother 3 or Policenauts) to play a fan translation.

I do think that when you really like a particular pirated game and it suddenly appears in your region as a remake, in a collection, on the Virtual Console or on a similar download service you should buy it. That's what I have done with Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG.

If games are nowhere near the standard advertised, why should people have to pay for them?

It's like having a pick-and-mix (buy before you try) with only mars planets.

But I do believe for good (even half decent) games thet people enjoyed, they should pay for them. This means more of the good things you like in gaming (psychonauts?) and less of the bad (halo 9billion).

Note: To those of you who don't know, mars planets is like taking maltesers then replacing 3/4 of the insides with weird things. However there's no real way to tell what's inside and if you will like it or not.

B and C are a given. If you already own it, then you're just getting a backup and if it can't be legally acquired then the publisher can go screw himself.

D and E are a bit of a gray area, but generally I'd say it's acceptable.

I'll agree with you up to C. However, the people who pirate media likley would not have paid for it anyway. The DRM is a silly thing, punishing the faithful consumer for the acts of the unruly few. I say few as a comparative term, mind you, in that if more people were pirating then buying the game the profit margins would be slim enough to probably shut down the gamming industry.

Having written a long message, posting it, and internet dying on me, I'll conclude with saying that I have been guilty of some bad things in the past. Mostly to "try before I buy". I do think that this is bad of me, and that the A, B and C options in the poll are the only acceptable ones. Are you going to spank me now?
