Well I voted less than average. Since I'm Danish I'm hoping most of the Escapist's users, with English as a first language are better than me. What a strange topic by the way.

I would hope that my language skills are slightly above average. I eliminated all of my college English Langauge/Literature courses before actually enrolling in a college, so I must be doing something right.

Then again, this site does feature a rather large number of people who bother to treat the language properly in difference to most other forums I've visited. I'm looking at you, GameFAQs.

My english sucks.

English is my secondary language, so I often misspell harder words. However, some people fail to realise that not everyone was born in the USA/UK, and feel the urge to grammar nazzi me. I hate that.

To all grammar- nazzis out there: I KNOW MY ENGLISH SUCKS, I am not making misstakes on purpose, I cant help it.

More often than not, I write better than others (defiantly better than I write), but often when I write on post my writing isn't that good because I rush through writing it & posting it. Also, it doesn't help that I can't spell for shit.

So, because of that I lower myself to about average w/ my fellow escapist. (writing stories is a different matter.)
Could someone please translate this for me?

i rite real good...
All joking aside, I think I have a solid grasp of the English language.
I write quite a lot and I'm an aspiring author, so I try to make my posts well worded and keep my grammar and spelling as good as possible.

Realistically I suppose I should put 'Better than average'. I frequent the RP section where we litterally survive on our linguistic panache so I've had lot's of practise.
I hate to do it, but the irony is striking there in bold.
...You're calling me out on an apostrophe? Really? Ah well, consider my vote rescinded. Chalk one more up for 'average'.

*laughs* Oohhhh, this can't be a good sign.

Ok, trying to say I can write good when I'm writing a story, but not so good when I'm writing posts.(as seen here by this guy's confusion.)

How can the majority of votes say "above average?" Average is average, regardless of the degree.

I voted average, as while i'm usually far above average on internet forums, the escapist generally keeps the standard of written English quite high!

my english is not very good, so i guess i would be under average. but sometimes i use a traslator and a dictionnary to write my posts, so it might help a bit. And since english is not my primary language, i guess i dont really care :)

People on this site like to believe they are better than everyone else; so expect a large number of "better than average" from all the "average" users such as myself. There are only two or three posters I would consider to have above average linguistic abilities on this site...

"Fellow Escapists" and "Fellow Escapists who vote on this poll" are different sets and therefore a result of "Better Than Average" in your poll is not indicative of incorrect perceptions.
This is actually a good example of bad writing masquerading as good writing. The person who wrote this thinks using lots of big words demonstrates intelligence and writing skill. Good writing involves choosing the best word for a given sentence, not the biggest one. A good writer would rarely if ever use a phrase like "indicative of incorrect perceptions".

I have definately noticed a recent dip in linguistic standards on these boards.

Many people make comments along the lines of 'uh itz de internet speling doznt mater'

It is important to write properly though, because people will generally take you and your opinions more seriously when you can articulate yourself in a clear and eloquent manner.
