Really Enjoyed it. One of the few games I beat in one sitting, I think I also blinked maybe 4 times total.

Great graphics, story line, and character development that actually made the ending really sad.

I played the game over two nights and found it quite enjoyable. I went through the campaign on hardened (I think, the one before Veteran) without much difficulty. I would have played through on Veteran but I was home from Uni for the weekend and couldn't invest a week or two into completing it on Veteran.

I quite enjoyed it and do not think any less of the game because I haven't played the 'genre defining' multiplayer. I think that there's a problem with a game if it says 'don't worry about the single player, the multiplayer is where the game comes to life' but CoD4 is not one of those games. If need be rent it, complete it over a weekend and then decide if the multiplayer is worth the £30+

The campaign has some serious flaws and complete lack of innovation outside of those flaws. The first time I played through, it was on veteran, a) because of the CQB test and my insistence on doing a respectable time and b) I always like my games involving spec ops to be realistic. This means that, as others have pointed out, certain moments of the game grind to a standstill because of the vast quantity of enemies, all constantly respawning, and above all else, with an in built desire to shoot at you and you alone. It doesnt matter if theyre attacking a tank on your side, or a squad is perfectly positioned to massacre them. Many times, they just want YOU! This is clearly shown when once you die, in the middle of a fiece battle, like psychopaths they will continue to riddle your corpse with bullets while ignoring any and all danger doing so. Also, there is absolutely nothing innovative about the combat or level layouts. Both are incredibly linear.

Its in the actual story moments the campaign starts to shine, particularly when accompanied by the moments of extremely well presented gameplay. Being an SAS member assaulting a cargo ship in a fierce storm at sea.
Witnessing the death of one of the main characters you control after fleeing an impending nuclear detonation. Sneaking through the empty city of Chernobyl and avoiding the enemy as part of a two man SAS assassin team.
The game is so well presented dramatically and has such good set pieces, it doesnt matter than in the single player it really offers nothing unique apart from what was listed above. While the gameplay doesnt match, this game looks and feels fantastic and is so well presented you would be a fool not to overlook the rather simple and basic gameplay.

If you like multiplayer, this game really shines here. The way the game gives rewards and upgrades is just a huge added incentive to play the already exciting multiplayer matches. Working hard in matches and being rewarded by the ability to better mould your created classes to fit your style better, and in turn perform better is incredibly addictive. One of the best multiplayer shooters Ive ever played, and I have played a fair few.

Overall I give the game four stars.

If you are trying to buy CoD 4 on the xbox, the 1000g gamerscore if offline so it will always be possible to get all of the achievements. If that's what you are after.

Word of Advice, though; Don't head straight into Veteran difficulty, unless you are amazing at FPS games. The mission "Charlie Don't Surf" is a real bugger first time on Veteran. I made that mistake :p

4/5 stars from me

I'll throw 4 stars at it.
I hate single player FPS with a passion but multiplayer is what always gets me.
It's not Counter-Strike, but it's a good substitute for a little while.

I refuse to give it a numeric rating of any kind as they are ALWAYS ARBITRARY AND STUPID.

That said, it's pretty damn good and you should most definitely check it out. File it under whatever "stars" you can equate that too.

5 stars - best shooter I've played

Singleplayer is short but good and immersive
Multiplayer is almost perfect for me if the lag issues at peak times would be resolved on the 360

Its a good game the story player while short is fun and actually playable (unlike WaW veteran mode).

The multiplayer is fun i hate the perk system but thats just me and people still play it, you can pick up the game pretty cheap and plus if your a achievement whore its a easy 1000 gamerscore

I give it 4 stars good game overall just a tad short on story but multiplayer makes up for it abit
Hmmm... I have actually completed WaW on Veteran... took me a while though...
WaW's veteran mode took me like 2 days - really annoys me though since I could never get the dam Blue Ribbon achievement cause people keep backing out

The single player is really good. Didn't like the multiplayer as much though.

The multiplayer is just downright fun. However, if you were to join now, you will be outclassed. That is my only complaint about the multiplayer. It does not pair you with people of similar skill. I don't have the time to get that good on COD4, and I have too many other games to play. However, if I were to dedicate my life to one game, it would probably be COD4.

The campain is, for lack of a better word, epic. It allows you to feel the absolute horror of a nuclear attack. The sheer awesomeness of portraying a true sniper (best sniper mission ever). The coolness of being a gunner on an AC-130 gunship. And I have yet to see a better ending in a video game (shadow of colossus maybe). Sad, but damn good.

So, yes, I would buy it. Obviously this is a first person shooter, so if you don't like FPS, don't bother. But if you do, it is a good one.

As close to perfection as an FPS game will get for now.

Multiplayer was incredibley addictive and Singplayer was fun, had a engaging storyline and was pretty challenging (Mile High Club)

Best FPS I've ever played. Period.

And that's including HL2, which I still think is a super-awesome amazing game.

Although HL2 just pips it for me still, this was a pretty much perfect shooter.

My only issue is with the infinite enemies, it isn't fun to throw a flashbang and run like hell to the checkpoint, it has no sense of achievment with it. Cut this out for MW2!!!

In the TV station on Veteran, my way of beating it was to fire a flashbang and run down the coridoor. I didn't fire a shot.

It's an easy 980 Gamerpoints. The last 20 will have you pounding your head against a wall.

Achievements aside, Modern Warfare is a great game. The story is captivating, the controls make sense, the gameplay is easy to pick up, and multiplayer is, for the most part, well balanced. Veteran's a bit of a pain in the neck, but it's supposed to be. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a fun FPS.

I gave it 5 stars. The single player campaign was just... really good.

I haven't played the multiplayer though, due to my getting the game through questionable means.

It's very good. It took me a good month or two to go through the campaign, but that's only because I'm embarassingly terrible at most videogames.

My only REAL gripe, would be that the story mode was too short. But that meant you could hop online alot faster.

CoD 4 was definitely the greatest shooter I've ever played. I've put over 12 days into it on LIVE, and the leveling system is totally addicting.

The story was awesome, gameplay is amazing, it's probably the closest to perfect a game has ever come (aside from juggernaut, noob toob, martyrdom and the like).
