The base campaign of a FPS should last at least 20 hours.
The base campaign of a RTS should last closer to 35-40.
The base campaign of a RPG should last at least 50-60 hours.

Nowadays though, you're lucky if your FPS lasts you eight hours, but people think it's "excused" because of multiplayer. (Like multiplayer hasn't existed since freaking Doom!)
I agree totally with those numbers. I am also starting to get sick and fed up with these companies churning out games with pathetically small games with the excuse that it comes with an extra add on. All I have to say to counter that statement is Warcraft 3. It had an amazing and long campaign, and it had a great free multi-player aspect to it as well.

RPG's are kind of up in the air, same with RTS.

Ultimately in a shooter you just keep shooting, but if the games allow for it RTS and RPG's can constantly change the style of gameplay in introduce new challenges.

I hate that, too. Like Yahtzee says, some people just don't care about multiplayer. I do, but I know two people who only play TF2 online.

i agree just about all around, except personally games like Counter-strike, dont exactly shine in the story line department, and who actually played condition zero single player? so I think whether or not multiplayer is a legitimate factor, can also depend on the genre/sub-genre
