As long as the game is good, it can be whatever it wants to be.
That's also my philosophy. As long as it's good, it can be about a three-legged unicycle riding elephent with a glass eye. It really doesn't matter.

In sandbox games, the presentation and story often suffers, because every event on the world map tells a small piece of the story.
In linear games, it is much easier for the developers to tell the story, even though this doesn't mean the story in linear games are better.

Linear are more polished and offer better stories. Open World offer more variety and choice, while sacrificing the polish and some of the story.

I don't mind games being linear as long as it's consitantly entertaining, no long hard slog just to get to the next bit of the story thank you very much.

I don't mind. To me it's all about how the game-play is and graphical style. I enjoy both linear and non-linear games, though I tend to like sandbox games more sometimes.

It depends in military style shooters I hate linear behavior because it is bullshit. I mean I should be able to go from cover to cover until I am able to put grenades on target not take some long roundabout way to flank the damn thing. It just depends but I like having a ton of options which is one of the biggest reasons I love Crysis I have a multitude of ways to take out enemy bases, personnel, etc.

Depends on the game, but generally I enjoy linear games more. Sandbox games are fun but eventually the sandbox elements get a bit old.

It all depends on the game. Every game can't be Oblivion style totally open sandboxes. Many games are really fun and linear at the same time (i.e. COD4's campaign).

That goes for me as well. As long as it is fun to play and isn't too short that is.

I like linear games. too many options forces me to explore them all (there might be something down there, ya know?).
I don't really mind sandbox either though.
it all depends on the game really.

Yes and no.

Yes if the game is just simple and funny so it doesn't need much else.

But if a game is supposed to have depth then some non linear game design would be nice.

Meh, I like sandboxes more. Linear games make me feel like they didn't give me a bang for my buck

In the future we will most likely be able to make games so well that an open world game will have just as much detail and story as todays linears. Todays linear games are getting more and more like open world games, just look at l4d vs l4d2.

To borrow a line "I don't mind linearity in a story heavy game as long as it's well told.", Zero Punctuation: Siren Blood Curse

Kingdom Hearts, SW: Battlefronts campains, the Force Unleashed, Need for Speed:U, U2, MW, etc.
All story heavy (racing and story usually dont mix well so any story at all could be counted), and linear in progression to a point. But the stories are well told and usually don't lead to people leaping for the mute button in cut scenes.
