Question:

Is it really that interesting? I am considering playing the trial version? I play Lotro and been playing for over 2 years and 5 years of FFXI recently.

That depends on what type of game you think it is.

If you think its an MMO, the technically yes, there are many people online in one world (server) that you can play with.

If you think its a click-wait combat system, you'd be mistaken. Its far more like an FPS than any other MMO I have tried. In fact the only thing keeping it from really feeling like a true FPS is the lack of first person view and they are adding that in the next update (coming soon...)

If you think its a cookie cutter class system, then you have never played D&D. The rules are all based around D&D v3.5. The only major limit Turbine placed was that you can only have a total of three classes. With six races and and combination of 9 classes, there are hardly ever 2 builds that are indentical, unless people are really trying to match what someone else did.

There are also no, "collect five pelts" quests ... Outdoor areas are self containted and optional, no running 30 min to get to a quest. All combat zones are instanced, so no camping. Voice chat is built in, so no trying to coordinate other to a 3rd system (I dont know how I ever played a game without this).

Oh ... and the graphics (at least on my box) are way better than anything else I played online.

Its not perfect by any means ... but I expect with level 20 coming up soon, most of the updates after that will be focusing on the "nice to haves".

PS - 20 levels may sound low, but its a much closer comparison to 100 in other games.

I played it a couple of years ago, and really liked it, but I ran into some issues. Since there are quite a few people on here who still play, maybe you could tell me if they've addressed them at all. I was playing just before the patch when drow were released, and at that point, there wasn't a lot of solo-able content, and it took me about ten to twenty minutes to find a group for quests. Then the patch came out, and 90% of the server went and made a drow to level up, as their stats were all around better. I didn't mind drows being a little better, but now it was taking me closer to an hour to find a group for an instance. They started implementing solo-able content, but it was all on the lower level things. If I tried to do a non-solo content by myself, I could usually kill a few mobs before dying, but since you didn't get xp till the end of the instance, and mobs didn't drop anything, unless I happened upon a chest, I was dying repeatedly, using up resources (and if I remember right, losing xp for dying, but I'm not 100% on that one) and making no net gain.

So my question is this: Have they changed it at all to make it easier to hop on, do a quest, and hop off without waiting to get a group to do the instances? And if not, is there at least some reward for trying things on my own when I can't find a group? Are all the solo-able quests still low level quests? I really did love playing it, but at the time I couldn't justify paying for an mmo when I was spending all my time sitting in a tavern waiting for a group and not actually playing. Thanks in advance.
Well, on the solo front there are a couple of things. Yes, they have added "Solo" difficulty to more quests. Additionally they have added outdoor areas that are "solo-able". In the outdoor areas there are various quests that log as you go. For instance, there is a "Slayer" quest in all outdoor areas that scales. First its kill 10 ... then 50 then 100, etc etc. Each level granting more and more XP. This tallies every time you go out and kill something, so you can hop on, kill some things, and log out ... or even do it while looking for a party.

People are over drow. So thats not an issue anymore. I suspect with Half-Orc/Elf come out, it will be the same story: a shiny new toy for everyone to play with. OH! And you dont lose XP for dieing anymore. Now you take minor damage to equiment, so it costs gold instead of XP. No more party wipes costing a nights worth of XP.

I knew it would be an MMO but I also thought it would be a click and wait type game also. Not that I have any problems with them it's just I have quit so many MMO's because of crappy updates or other small things and I just don't feel it's worth it anymore!

I really appreciate all the info and I will go look at a trailer or just Youtube it to see if it captures my interest so your efforts are not wasted! :)

How is the wait time for grouping up for quests? Have they implemented anything to help with that at all? Also, do you get any sort of reward (besides xp) for the outdoor quests? Do the mobs drop anything or do you still have to turn in the quests/stumble across chests?

Sometimes you still wait and sometimes you don't. You can also buy a hireling to run with you. I have to say that hubby and I lvl a lot of toons alone for the most part just because we tend to run at odd hours. Sometimes with just he and I and sometimes we each bring a hireling.

Hirelings are basically NPC's that you can purchase to go on one quest with you. You pick the class you want and when you pull it out to use it you get another tool bar to control it with.

There is a wide variety of types of quests, raids and adventure areas. Many of the quests have their own flavor.

Yes, it really is that interesting. I hope you and others give it a try. Make sure to look through the forums if you have questions before you start. A great deal of information is there if you are willing to take the time to browse through it. Any questions, just ask. :)

Anyone interested in sending me a trial key? The Turbine account website seems to be working fine. It's just the DDO trial webpage that's all weird.

Wait time depends on a lot of factors I guess. Most importantly time of day and day of the week you are playing. I personally dont spend a lot of time waiting around. It helps that I have several different characters to play so I can usually fill what a group is looking for, and there are things I can do (in game even) while I wait. And of course, Im REALLY lazy, but even I will start a group if I want to do someting specific, in the evening (US) they always fill withing 10-15 min tops if we bother waiting to be full.

As for the outdoor areas, no there is no quest turn in for those, and any mob always has the chance of dropping collectibles, but there are named mobs with chests for extra XP (most people will know where they are if you dont want to 'stumble across' them, but thats half the fun right?). There are quite a few of them that have some nice named loot that drops. Again, since its all instanced, there is no camping.

I have looked at the trial. My thoughts are found here. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.103976?page=8] For those whom clicking links is too advanced, I didn't like it. I find the controls unintuitive and unresponsive and really do not care about the game world. For an MMO, that only leaves the community to draw you in, but out of all the MMO's I have played, I have hardly, if ever interacted with any other player.

On the whole, I've found the experience disappointing, but I am still early in the trial. I may change my mind, but I doubt it.

As a long time DDO player, I feel it is dishonest for you guys to not tell peeps interested in DDO about all of the cool features that DDO has added. Like game breaking lag. Lag so bad that your guildies say, " This sucks, I'm gonna log and go play something else." And while they are aware of the problem, Turbine has been unable, or unwilling, to fix it.

-Monks. If you liked monks in DnD, be prepared to be unimpressed. Take a peek at the DDO forums and see how many are unhappy with the implementation. Not to mention they have been locked out of crafting for their signature weapons.

-Content. Sure if you have been gone for two years they have added a bunch of content, but if you left after January 08,' guess what? Almost no new high level content has been added. Sure they added two raids, to bad they placed them in what might be the most laggy area in DDO.

So sure, c'mon over and try it out. Maybe what we need is one more person asking for the game to be fixed.

Oh for pissake. All you indie game designers out there- take this idea and run! Thanks for the mental image.

I haven't played DDO, though I think I would like it. Thing is that I've got too many other games that I have a blast with on my numerous consoles, and when I look at my computer, I think "that is for work/school/Escapisting, not for games." I may check out the free trial and if I do, it will be because of the rush of fans that just came through the site.

Would have been playing for 3 years now if it hadn't been for a bad flat move. Its left me living in a caravan with no internet access so my DDO fix has had to go begging for now.

Will state tho that if anyone is interested in joining on the EU servers feel free to PM me still as I will be happy to give you any advice you need and point you towards a few friendly guilds on either server.

I will also add that as others have said if you havent played this game before or havent played in over a year its definately worth having a look as there is currently nothing else like it on the market.

I did the trial a few months ago and was pretty impressed with the water graphics. The learning curve was steep so I didn't understand how the missions worked. And the community was actually very mature, but the size of it was small. I played it for two days and the rest were unplayable because of server/graphics issues. Overall, I wasn't impressed. If the server didn't have so many problems then it might have caught my interest, but there wasn't enough to make me want to go back. But now that the Turbine fans have come and told us how awesome it is, I just might give it another chance.

I love the way they have done Monks, each to their own.

p.s. Only pansies need greensteel!

As for the lag sorry to hear you guys are still suffering, we are thankfully free of it on the EU servers.
