I have an odd opinion on anime. The only anime I ever really liked was Akira, but that's because I was really young when I first saw it. Though I dislike anime, I'm speaking in terms of the actual cartoons themselves. The sub-culture it created has given me too many laughs for me to dislike. It's weird, even though I am not into it, I still recognize most of the popular shows and understand them enough to be able to laugh at the inside jokes.

I like japanese cartoons. I tend to only watch psychological/horror/scary shows. Things like Higurashi/Umineko, Gantz, Hellsing (Ultimate), Beserk, Elfen Lied, and plenty others.

Good shows, good shows.

Seeing as how "anime" is not a genre (contrary to the cultural meaning of it it's not even an art style. Anime is literally just the Japanese word for Cartoon. You could say a Pixar movie is anime and you still wouldn't be wrong) I can't really say I flat out dislike it.

However, it is true that many of the series that people think of when one says "anime" are ones I dislike. I'm not a fan of Inuyasha, Death Note, Full Metal Alchemist, Naruto or Bleach.

But there are plenty of anime that I do enjoy. Katekyo Hitman Reborn, Cromartie High School, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Bandit King: Jing, Case Closed

So I can't really say whether or not I like or dislike anime as a whole. If I like a series, I like it.

Voted dislike but thinking better it's more the people surrounding this culture that make me scream at animes "kill it with fire". I know they aren't all bad and mostly just the fantasy ones are,the only anime I really liked was calle Beck,The Mongolian Chop Squad(yeah i know stupid name or stupid translation). It was about rock bands, rock life that kind of stuff and it was mature without beeing pretentious which is saying alot not only for an anime but for any media covering this kind of life.

Simple enough: anime is animation made in Japan.

The thing I love about it is that Japan has no concept of the "Animation Age Ghetto." Everywhere else in the world it seems like people think animation is for kids and only fit for silly ridiculousness, that it can't incite emotion or tell good stories. Japan doesn't buy into that stupid crap. They make animated children's comedies as well as animated crime dramas and dark fantasies and gritty sci-fi. Anime has provided some of the highest emotional highs and lowest emotional lows I've ever reached through works of art.

The thing that helped me into anime is Avatar: The Last Airbender. It's not anime; it's western animation all the way. But the animation is inspired by Japanese animation and the show is just plain good. It's a children's show that has some of the best characterization, world development, and storytelling prowess of any show I've ever seen, and simply manages to be kid-friendly throughout. A truly incredible show.

Then I moved on to shows like Cowboy Bebop and Death Note, and from there on to the heartbreaking roller coaster Clannad, the under-appreciated fantasy classic Orphen, the insane WTF-fest of Fooly Cooly... it's good stuff.

Anime is alright. Might watch it on the odd occasion i have no choice. Don't think it really deserves the cultist like following it has though as a whole.

Didn't vote because there's no "I'm indifferent" option. I neither like or dislike it.

You need a third option; the ever important, "I couldn't give a rats arse".

I don't like or dislike it.

I like some anime but not all obviously.

I think anime has great potential and I tend to watch films and series with higher qualities of animation. For example Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Sword of the Stranger, Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Beebop and Black Lagoon. Impressive series some of which also have some good humour in them but I can't stand stereotypical highschool anime or highschool kid with super powers (Death Note is exempt from this for OBVIOUS reasons) They tend to be very cliche, lack any real writing depth and more often than not have very bland animation. I used to watch Naruto but then the convoluted stories and flashback heavy episodes bored me out of it, Bleach just got ridiculous and noone ever died so most tension was removed and with each major battle they got worse (Ichigo vs Renji was a badass swordfight) as the show goes on the fights resemble DBZ more with characters flying around firing energy blasts at each other.

It took me a long time to get into anime because when I was around 10 years old the only exposure I had to it was Pokemon and Dragonball Z which I thought were terrible (Opnions don't get up in my shit about them) so I stayed away for a long time until my friend enlightened me about Ghost in the Shell (when I was like 15) and how it was one of the inspirations for The Matrix, got me to watch it and I thought it was great.

I think that even if you don't love the art style, if you dislike it, you haven't watched it enough. Like saying you don't like movies because you watched Nacho Libre, or comics because you read Mr.T and the T force.

Most anime shows are aimed at children and pre-teens so I can't say I hate it when I'm not even in the intended demographic.
...Really? I always got the impression a lot of it was aimed at teens. Maybe I just watched the teen demographic when I was a teen, but a lot of the anime I've seen has blood, gore, and often reference to sex in it.

OT: Me? I quite like anime, in the same way I quite like movies or quite like American animation. It's a medium, not a genre. It'll have it's typical reoccurring elements, but the one's I've like I've really liked. The fact that it's from another culture and is animated has never been a barrier.

I think most of us like anime here, but perhaps the nature of this thread will attract more people who dislike anime than those who do. So far the poll seems to not show that though.

The main reason I like anime is that as partly asian I can identify more with the anime physique. If I look at protagonists of western games/comics/etc they're often to brawny/stocky for my tastes.

I dislike most of it. It's banal, ugly, boring tripe with cliché characters, dull episodes and crap writing. Naruto, for example.

There's a few good anime series/films, but I hate most of it.

Not as much as I hate some of the fans, though...

I have to be in the mood for it.

One Christmas someone had gotten me DVDs of Origin and Howl's Moving Castle, and I watched those MFers back to back, totally absorbed in the story and characters.

I find that ongoing series just cannot hold my interest. These are the anime shows padded with stupid filler, bloated out to 700 episodes. No. Give me 25 or 30 at most. I want a beginning, a middle, and an ending. I would like a crisply told story without an overload of boring subplots and romantic fanservice.

OT: I enjoy anime but I've always been more for western cartoons. Well, older western cartoons.
