While I voted that I like it, I must say that most anime I'd prefer as live-action. I mean sure, they'd be horrible in reality, but in theory you can imagine how awesome that too-expensive-to-produce Cowboy Bepop movie might've been with the right actors.

Of course here in reality, where anime has a myriad of wonderful stories to tell, I still hate the cheap production value. Seriously, Y U NO LIP-SYNC in a goddamn 3 fps video.

IMO none of the things that define anime are very flattering. Sure, animation in general has some styles that won't work in any other medium, but the fact that CGI-Moomins would be creepy as fuck, has nothing to do with anime characters being frozen solid when they speak.

Still, if a scifi-fan(or anoyone else for that matter) can't enjoy Gurren Lagann, Cowboy Bepop, Gankutsuou, FLCL or Planetes... I think the newest South Park episodes might be very relevant.

And as a cherry on top, let's not forget what 90% TV and movies also is.
[sub] Wow. That really doesn't work with the South Park refrence, oh well.[/sub]

I do like anime, but surgeon's law comes to play in my opinion of it.

So yeah, I think most anime is shit, especially all of the modern "kawaii desu?" cutesy stuff like K-on, Rozen Maiden, and Lucky Star. Also, I find the mainstream stuff like Dragonball Z, Bleach, Naruto, and One piece to be boring as all hell, and far too long winded for my liking (there's no way I'm sitting through 500 odd episodes of the same shit).

Haruhi Suzumiya is pretty cool though, well... the first season at least. Higurashi is another kinda cutesy anime i like, but it's overtones are really dark, and serious, especially in the later episodes.

My favourite anime will always be Darker than Black, and the golden oldies, like Neon genesis Evangelion, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Slayers, Guyver, and the old anime movies such as, Cyber city odeo 808, Ninja Scroll, Akira, Perfect Blue, and Appleseed.

I like anime enough to be critical of it.

I find it odd and ironic since a lot of people who play video games hate anime, but they keep complaining about other people hating video games. But, whatever.

For me, I got into anime really early on, like at around 9 or 10, when I saw Tenchi Muyo on a public access channel that would hold unedited, mostly subbed anime on Sunday evenings. I'll never forget crying myself to sleep the first time I saw Ryoko "die." Ever since, I've just been drawn to anime like a moth to flame. There's just something about it all that just makes it so much more entertaining than ANYTHING else that I watch it almost to the complete exclusion of American media. And I'll watch damn near anything, though I do get bored of certain anime cliches that have been far too overused (the pansy male lead who couldn't tell if a gal was seducing him if she were sucking him off in public, the "violent" tsundere who has to destroy anyone or anything that even hints that she has a soft side, lolis in fucking general, the list goes on.)

To be fair, the Grand Line was supposed to be a land of little logic, where storms and typhoons and massive sea monsters could crop up at any moment to swallow up unprepared sailors. Basically, One Piece's entire premise beginning with and well beyond sailing up the mountain (but not to go to a sky kingdom, you've crossed two arcs together) was based entirely on absurdity. I will agree on Naruto, however, as well as Bleach and Inuyasha. Fuck Aizen and fuck Naraku, honestly.

They're just cartoons. It's hardly a separate medium from any other style of animation. Not everybody has to enjoy or appreciate cartoons. If you want to assign some special extra value or significance to them, good for you, but don't expect everyone to.

I find myself saying this alot in the recent days, but I dont dislike anime, I dislike a lot of its fanbase. Its another cultures way of entertainment so I cant really rip on it too hard for some of the strange cultural stuff. Weaboos though, they drive me insane. A lot of anime, I have noticed, feeds the weaboos with lame anime cliches that are completely arbitrary and pointless besides to draw more attention from the weaboos. I also dont like how most of the anime fanbase tends to believe that anime is better than other forms of entertainment because its "more deep". Yes, some anime plots might have a deep emotional meaning but thats not all thats important in good entertainment.

I like it but haven't watched much of it.

I have watched HSOTD and Gurren Lagann and liked both. I intend to watch Trigun next as Cowboy Bebop wasn't great for the first 2-3 episodes.
Cowboy bebop is an amazing anime but it starts off strong so if you did not like the first few then I guess it is not your thing.

Many people dislike anime because of the stereotype of Naruto (I liked it when I was a kid but today it makes all anime look childish).

This is what I am annoyed at. Anime is very varied, today it may even be wrong to say "most". Some of the best films I have ever seen have been anime' (the Ghost in the Shell's, Perfect Blue). And they all dealt with mature topics often to a greater extent than non anime films I have seen with similar intentions.

Amongst the Series I have seen Cowboy Bebop, NGE, FLCL (that could be excluded I guess kids could watch that though it is the anime equivalent of an acid trip) and Black Lagoon are all very popular anime series that are definitely not aimed at teens.

Hell even the childish ones Bleach and One piece are not oriented so much at children/teens as both of them get pretty violent and sometimes downright brutal.

I grew to hate naruto and grew to love one piece. Naruto just got boring whereas One Piece had a clear aim of being over the top and crazy, a childish atmosphere with increasingly brutal fighting as the series progressed. I can understand that one piece often deterred people because it looks childish but I like to think that it's heart is in the right place.

Edit: Oops Forgot to give Credit to Darker than Black, one weird and wonderful take on the classic superpowers situation.

I like it. There's always something for everyone and that's why it's appealing to a lot of people. Also, a lot of anime is an adaptation of manga that goes by the same title, so it gains a lot of it's popularity from that.

Aaaaand that's the exact argument they use against gaming. "It's just a game."

Seinen: Look it up. Also, you're thinking about shonen. While shonen is a lot of the most popular anime, its not most of it. It's like saying EVERY game EVER is COD.

Perhaps you should take some of your own advice. I edited the OP hours ago, editing out anything that could be remotely inflammatory or confrontational, while you continue to egg me on by claiming that I'm making things up.

You were making things up with by fabricating a lie that I was indeed trying to provoke others into an argument.

If you have anything else to say, feel free to PM me personally. If you'd rather not continue speaking to me, perhaps you could engage in a civil discussion with someone else in the thread. If you're too irate to be bothered with any of this, you can kindly leave. There are plenty of other threads that you may feel more welcome in.

I like anime...but I really don't watch it. I enjoyed Spiral, Ninja Scroll and Death Note. Everything else in the genre that I've seen that I knew was anime I didn't enjoy.

So to say I like it is accurate, but it's like saying I like country music...when in fact my 900 song playlist contains only 3 country songs.

I should note that I'm not entirely sure what defines an anime to begin with. I enjoy a lot of cartoons...but some of them may in fact be considered anime. Samurai Jack for example...I class it as a cartoon and enjoyed it, for all I know it's anime.

Claiming that I pointed out I "[will] search for a flame war in anything" was making things up. Please don't accuse me of egging you on simply by pointing out you're not being honest.

In fact, I suspect such deliberate and aggressive language is probably flame baiting in and of itself, but I'm trying to give the benefit of the doubt.

In short: If you didn't make up my determination to search for a flame war in anything, there would have been no further conversation. You removed the inflammatory material, yes, but you proceed to lie about me in a derogatory fashion. Skip that part, and there's no problem here.

I love anime. I don't know what got me into it though. I think it was Death Note.

I think anime is great as a medium, but in all honesty, I can sort of understand why people get turned off by anime. It's because there is a LOT of horribad, generic moe-moe fanservice, no plot cliche shows (fall season 2011 >.>). There are just a few gems that shine through all the garbage.

But if you do happen to watch the amazing ones (Baccano!, Clannad, Steins;Gate, FLCL) you'll have a great time! (In my case at the very least)

As I interpret the point, it's more to the point that anime is no more special than any other form of cartoon, not that it was supposed to be derisive, which the "just games" generally is, as it tries to delegitimise games as a hobby, an art form, and things adults do.

That may just be me, though. I have no trouble calling anime cartoons, possibly because I enjoy a good cartoon, as well. Nor do I care about the "kids" stigma of cartoons, because there are some awesome kid-oriented features, both animated and live action. Take pretty much everything Pixar's done.

I like anime a fair bit, but only a small selection. Evangelion (obviously), Cowboy Bebop, Death Note, and Ghost in the Shell are favorites of mine. :3 Aside from those... I don't really bother.

I like anime, especially Gintama. It helped me recover from depression. Laughter really does help :D
