Only read The Fellowship of the Ring but I will at some point get round to reading the others. Not a lot of spare time right now.

Me and my dad read the entire trilogy back when the 1st movie was in the theatres but before I watched it. I liked it enough to read through Hobbit and Silmarilion afterwards.

Just an errant thought that crossed my mind, as I read it quite recently and I thought it was an epic that should be required reading for all.
The poll needs an options that says "I tried", or "read part of it"

I tried reading two towers when I was twelve, and I had fun with the Aragorn party, but I couldn't handle the Frodo-stuff, so I didn't finish it.

my copys of the books are so worn and tired from multiple readings, strangely my copy of the silmarillion if probably more worn, because i go to different pages to reference different storys.

I'm of the Tolkien Uruk Hai - I've read the LoTR trilogy more time than I can count, as well as numerous other hard-to-find Tolkien works.

I tried, but I only got through the first half of the first book and gave up.

And... Holy fuck, Tolkien, settle down with the excessively amount of "and the great tree looked like.. and the great tree smelled like.. and the great tree did this in the elements.. and the great tree had intricate marking on it that are described intrinsically as such.." in your writing. I swear, Avatar's CGI set detail made Lord of the Rings novels look like blueprints to the entirety of New York City, and Avatar described the subway.

Not to say they weren't great books to read, just horrendously tedious (Dan Brown wins first place on this one, of course).

I've read the The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and some of The Silmarillion.

The Hobbit was a cracking read.

The Lord of the Rings was also great, but towards the end it just dragged on so much. It took me two attempts to finish it, but finish it I did, dammit!

The Silmarillion is the one I can't do. I... just couldn't. It was so dull and tedious and there were so many names that were so similar and I am not gonna keep a chart of who is who when I read a book! I got about a hundred or so pages in, then realised that I because I had mis-read a single paragraph, I had no idea what the fuck was going on. So I called it day. It's sat on my shelf gathering dust since then.

Read it. Disliked the ending on the movies, because the jarring return to Shire and seeing it... ahem, despoiled, is the real finale for me.

The hobbits were heroes. They'd seen the big world. There could be no return to the old innocence, and so, appropriately, there is no innocence left to return to.

And yet, they'd also learned that adversity can be overcome for a better future. Hence them cleaning house.

Why, oh why, did the movies have to leave it out.

Oh well. Can't have all we want. Still liked the extended versions of the movies and the book series as well.

Silmarillon is something I really would like to like, but it's just too disjointed for me. Too many characters, alien (elven) names - usually two or three for a single object or person and too long timescale.

I started reading it when I went through a fantasy phase but it quickly got replaced by a sci-fi one when I started watching Star Trek. I got to the battle of Helm's Deep.

It's on my to do list though as soon as I've finished everything by Isaac Asimov and HP Lovecraft.

See, That's the reason I am glad they left him out, personaly I always thought he was a bit of a dick. Of course I would never of said that to his face;)

Me? I have read them about 12 times I think through my life.

I read the Lotr after seeing the first film...I was actually reluctant to even see the Fellowship when it first came out. My friend lent me his dvd copy, I watched it and fell in love with it.

I then read the books (obviously)...I love everything about Lotr and out of my book collection (lets just say out of 10 for ease of numbers) I would say 8 out of 10 are Tolkien books.

Clearly it was fate for me to love Lotr as the part of my town I live in all the road names are from it. My road name is Buckland Gate =P

I read it and then got my hands on the Hobbit and the Silmarillion. The Hobbit was fine but I really struggled with the Silmarillion and hen gave up.
