As a gamer, it's hard not to own all three. Unfortunately, I don't own a PC good enough to play today's games...
See, I'd think it'd be the opposite. to be a gamer, all you need is a PC.
All the others are just garnish, at best.
Then again, what's a gamer? my personal definition isn't just some guy that buys all the mainstream games. To me, it's someone who truly enjoys trying different games, either independently made or not. And there just isn't anywhere NEAR as many choices for PS3/XBox/Wii. Not even close.
100% agree.
True, but even then you're cutting yourself off from some of the best mainstream games. You have Half Life and Halo 3, but you won't get to play God of War, Metroid Prime or inFAMOUS (as crazy as it sounds, I'm not the only person who's stoked about this game). You are opening yourself fully to the indie games, but at the same time you are turning your back on the mainstream almost fully, and then you are no better than the people who only play Mainstream games and look down on anything that didn't have a 6 figure budget.
Well, thats my opinion. I now await the people who will tell me what a complete idiot and troll I am.
Nah you're not a troll nor an idiot. Good response. But I still believe a "true gamer" (which is open for a wide debate) should want variety. And there is no greater variety of video games then what's available on the PC. Of course, I'd highly recommand getting a controller that mimics a consoles controller for certain games, such as GRID or Resident Evil and the like.
And of course you can't forget the mainstream games that are PC only, which the console'ers won't get to play. Medieval 2, Crysis and Crysis Warhead, Neverwinter Nights 2, Diablo 3, Starcraft 2, Gothic 3, sims 2 and 3, Company of Heroes, a vast majority of the MMO's (some of the most played games in the world) and plenty more. Then you also have games that suffer from consolities.. such as the World in Conflict port that's coming soon. It's a phenomenal game for the PC that has to "dumb" itself down for people to be able to play it on consoles.
What about user created content and mods? They can really help make a bad game, good (Oblivion) or make a good games life span increase (Baldur's gate 2)
Again, my point was mainly about the variety you get on the PC. How many grand strategy games can you really play on Xbox? How about sports MMO's like Freestyle basketball or Shot online, which are low budget but fun as hell (and free)? and of course there's countless independent titles out there, and tons of "old" PC exclusives that arrived before consoles infiltrated every home in America. The amount of video games I can play for free (America's Army, F.E.A.R. Combat, lots of other titles) is nothing to scoff at, either.
I'm hoping it's only a matter of time before people realize a console is nothing more a then a glittery PC that you can't do much with. Just FYI, I also own a DS, Wii, and PS3. But if someone made me pick one, I'm keeping my gaming computer. 2 of those 3 were gifts, and the other is because I wanted a cheap blu-ray player.
