Like the title says, when you trade in a game at gamestop (or whatever other store you go to trade used games in) how much of the original purchase price do you get back?

By original purchase price I mean how much you paid for it, not how much it was when it came out. So if you bought a used game for $45, what percent of those $45 would you have gotten back if you were to bring the game back and trade it in again?

I'm talking about this in terms of averages, so on average, what percent of the game's cost do you get back from trading in a game?

Also what is the most you've ever gotten back for trading in a game, and what is the least you've ever gotten back? Do you think you should get more money back for trading in used games? Do you think that used games should cost less if Microsoft goes through with their plan for the Xbox One of making you pay a license transfer fee for used games you buy?

Depends. Sometimes I could get 15 bucks abck from an 80 dollar game. Sometimes I could get 60 back.
Well obviously it depends. I'm asking you to guess at an average.

Ehh, I don't sell my games in general. The fact that I buy everything online nowadays factors into it too XD

I remember the trade back value to be really dire when I used to trade stuff back at Game. Not even half the price I paid for them. This was like... Original Xbox times though.

I just keep everything just in case I want to play it again.

i never traded in any game nor i bought game used. Why?
The whole used games and trade-in thing is only just begun to lift off in my country. So before dropping 65-80$ on a game it must be ether 2 things.
1. It must be a J-rpg, it doesn't have to be great game, mediocre would do fine.
2. If it's not j-rpg it must provide at least 10 hours of single player game play and have good reviews.

really depends on the game... I don't trade in a lot of games, but I'd say 5-10 dollars for most.. if you're going by 50 dollar pricepoint (60 dollars averaged between 40 dollars used) that's 10-20% (if the game costs less then 40 dollars used, it's probably not even worth trading in)

some games you might get upto 20 for if they have a deal for it (basically if they know they'll sell it quickly), which would jump up to 40%.. and when I traded in Smash Bros Melee, I actually got 25 for it.

Then there are other games, that are sometimes worth a dollar, and sports games, which gamestop (or EB Games as it's typically known in canada) won't even accept

I was going to trade in Professor layton and the lost future to Gamestop, They had it on shelf for ?29.99 they offered me ?1.97 cash and ?2.50 in store credit.

As mentioned above your best bet is to sell things yourself Via, Adverts.ie or whatever your country's respective personal seller site is I got ?20 quid selling it myself.

Last time I traded in games (2005ish), I got a whopping $2 Store credit back for games I paid $50 for (Games they were still selling for $50 too).

And that is why I stopped trading in games at Gamestop.

What trade-ins?

I paid for the game, I'm keeping it. I try only to buy games I know I'll play multiple times anyways. If I don't care enough about it to keep it, I don't care enough about it to spend any money on it.

For the most part, it takes me ages to trade-in games so a lot of them are 1-10%.

I tend to trade in a lot at a time though, or as many as possible anyway.

If i bought brand new, then a week later i would lose maybe £10 in exchange and maybe a bit more online when you pay amazon their percentage. Its why i rent via lovefilm. Cost £12 a month and i can rent as many games as i can play for as long as i need to. Another reason if next gen stop rentals, i will stop gaming, because most games are not worth the £40 price tag. Just ask those that bought Aliens:CM, Homefront and Duke Nukem Forever.

I dont usually trade in games, but I remember one time trying to trade in Army of 2 to gamestop. They offered me a cent for it. I mean granted I thought it was a terrible game, but I could have more fun using the disc as a frisbee than selling it for a cent.

It would depend on the game. I keep a lot of rarer or better titles for myself that would go for much more, so I normally get around 15%. If I were to go in and trade say, baldur's gate, I could probably get about 60-70%. Granted a lot of my trade ins were from the ps2 era. For ps3 titles, I normally get 10-15%.

Haven't traded in a game since 2009, and that was the only time this entire generation I ever have. Don't remember what I got for it but here's my question: if the majority of you are only getting them for about >25% of their value, why not sell them online? I don't ever sell my games but I know that Glyde will give me much more than Gamestop and its easier than driving up to the store.

At GAME and Gamestation in the UK you get fuck all, so little that it's barely worth trading in. HMV on the other hand, they're suckers. They are very fair with trade ins, so I always pre-order with them, trade in a couple of games and it usually costs around £5-£10. However you can get more seling them on ebay or to a mate.
