By some freak event you have become rich. I don't know maybe you struck oil in your backyard or something but that doesn't really matter, what matters is that you now have more money than you know what to do with say $10 000 000 000.

These are my questions:
How much would you give away, if any?
Do you feel it is right that society will expect you to give away a large sum of money?
do you think it is right that your children might be expected to give money to others sheerly because they have it?
and if they don't is it right that they will be viewed as greedy by their peers?

Your turn.

Is that number in the OP $10 billion? If it is, then $15-20 million would be pocket change, and I would happily give more to charity. Unless I worked extremely hard for every penny I earned, I would feel obliged to do my part. It's the responsibility of the lucky and the powerful to give back to the world, at least that's how I feel.

$10 000 000 000.
That's 10 billion by the American viewpoint, 10 thousand million by English.

Either way, I'd probably donate about a million? There's no telling what I'll need the money for in the future, best to err on the side of caution.

I don't see how I couldn't give to charity, I'd feel so bad if I had the capability to help and I did not, I'm not that selfish.

It depends on the charity. I'm sorry but if a Church needs a bit of redecorating I couldn't give a flying #@:$ to be honest.

Half of it. That way, the charity still gets money, and I am still a lot richer. Everyone's happy.

I probably wouldn't give it to any big time charities as most of them pocket the cash anyway.

I'll just buy a few hobos meal tickets for a year and call it charity.

As much as I can afford. I'll make sure I don't go without though. Giving to charity is fine and dandy and I encourage it, but don't put their needs before your own.
I'll happily look like a twat to raise money too. I've walked round Leeds dressed like a zombie, walked round school in my pyjamas, in an evening dress and gun and also like a zombie to raise money.

If I just got it for some reason without working for it, I would give away some.
But if I worked hard for it, earned it as a decent person, I wouldn't give a dime away. It's my money, and no one else has the right to have it. I would maybe give a bit if I profited on it some way, but only if the profit was almost foolproof.
