I call every gentlemen I meet "Sir" and every woman I meet "Ma'am." But, I'm from Texas and we're raised that way.

It's ironic given that Sir is an aristocratic term that it's overwhelming used by Americans. In my experience British people usually only say Sir when refering to an actual knight, and even then more as part of a title than to address someone (they'd say Sir Paul McCartney, but still address him as Paul rather than Sir). Where I live, Ireland, it's used pretty much exclusively by pupils addressing male teachers.

That seems uncharacteristically polite and sophisticated for that state.

Me and my friends all work in a restaurant so we got used to calling everyone sir. Then we were talking about how much we just want to say to a customer, "you need to calm down, sir" or "Fuck you, sir"

So...we say it to each other on a daily basis =D

I use "sir" a decent bit when talking to my dad or my male professors. I can't think of any time I've used it online, though.

Rarely, and only in an ironic fashion.
I call male adults I respect "Herr" which is the same as "Mister".

It's really dependent on stuff, people's ranking/job. And as Ironic mentioned; when doing martial arts it's a must.

In my previous job I called quite a few people sir, but that was when I worked for the government. These days it doesn't come up often. I usually call the person by their name because that is generally what people want to hear in the real world.

Everyday. Everyone I don't know is "Sir" or "Ma'am", or their title, IE: "Sergant First Class, Master Sergant, President" etc.

I call most of my friends by their last name too.

In school we had to call our male teachers sir...but since i'm finished I'm not going to anymore.

Maybe i'll start calling people sire? or "hey you with the hair!"...or "hey you without the hair!" depends.
