Well I just went through the hell that is highschool, and a few of my friends already have plans to move out of their parents' home, or at least thinking about it. I myself don't plan to move out immediately, but it got me wondering about the average age of people moving out from their parents' home.

So I ask you, fellow Escapists, how old were you when you moved out? Reasons?

I moved out at 21, I think. I had a job and the money to do so, why not? I guess some people get along with their parents really well or something, I didn't.

I moved out when I left for university studies, so 18 for me. I still live at my family's house when I am on winter, spring, or summer breaks from school.

I'm 19 and I haven't moved out yet, college is within driving distance (actually lots of prospective colleges are within driving distance.)
so I see no reason to move out yet.

I just put 19+ because I will be leaving someday, just not now.

Well I now live in student dorms at university, so I guess that counts as moving out? I was 19 at the time :p

I moved out the day after finishing high school. Later in the year my parents needed me to drive my dad around after he lost his license, so I returned for a few months. Before the end of that year I had left again. All this at the age of 18.

I'm 20 and I'm hoping to move out soon. I completely hated everyone my age in high school and spending 8 hours a day with them was torture, no fucking way in hell I was going to go live with them in a college dorm.

I was 15 but since I moved out of my dad's and into a one-week-here-one-week-there trade-off with my sisters' respective homes I guess that doesn't count... Darn it, I voted too fast =/ I suppose I really moved out at 16 when I got a place in a youth home. I loved that place. Pity I only got to stay there a year...

I think that the best time to move out however - that is if you come from a non-dysfunctional family - is circa between the ages 18-20. And if you stay after you graduate High School, or whatever your country's equivalent of that is, you should pay your way as best you can. Even if it's just doing most of the chores around the house.

I still haven't. I have to support the family with my god damn cripple money.
I really want to leave. But if I leave, who the fuck pays rent and electricity. Nobody, that's who.

Same here, exactly. When I started uni though, it was literally the month after my 18th birthday (which was in August), so I left fairly early after I turned 18.

Hopefully I won't be going back anytime soon though. Not that I don't like my family or friends back home, because I do, a hell of a lot. I just reckon my hometown is a complete shit-hole and have all but adopted my university city as my new home. Trouble is I graduate this year, and can't afford to stay in my city so I'll have to move back home, and transfer my job to a store nearer home, unless I somehow manage to pull success out of the hat at my student union elections, which guarantees a job for the next year helping run the union, and the finances to stay in my university city for a while longer. Unlikely, but still a possibility, but I will literally do whatever I can to avoid going back to my hometown again, even just semi-permanently...

I was around 16. All of my older siblings had moved out of the apartment and I was left with it. Kinda cool actually. I'm still living here ^^
