Hey guys, I'm [name redacted] and I think I'm starting to realize I have a problem with privacy.

For example, I use (different) fake names on every website I join, I use the strictest privacy settings on Facebook (and I considered deleting my account), my parents have no idea who I hang out with, I delete text messages as soon as I get/send them, if you ask me what I'm doing or where I am, I'll always say "nothing much" or "nowhere important", and I hardly tell my friends anything personal about myself.

It's not like I have anything to hide or I'm some conspiracy nut, I just really, really hate the idea of other people in my business. I even got mad at my gf because she'd talk to her friends about us.

Does anyone else have this problem or is it just me? How private of a person are you? Is there anyone you can confide in, and if so, who?

EDIT: And my poll got eaten.... -________-
On this site, I'm fairly private. I don't have my real name posted, I haven't said which town or state I'm from, and I don't talk with other members about those things. I'm private because privacy and anonymity make it more interesting to post.

On places like Facebook, I show everything on my profile. I still don't have my city listed, but that's because I don't want any more "city specific" advertisements targeting me. Maybe I should just update it now...

I try my best to keep my social life and my family life totally seperate. I didn't even tell most people I know where I was when I was at a funeral for a dude who hung himself.

So....yeah, I'm pretty private.

I would say that I'm a private person both in real life and on the web.
I do not like to hand out my real name, since as far as I know there are only one person that is legally allowed to have my name in Sweden and that is me. So if you found my name you could quite easily find me.

I'm not a private person in terms of information distribution like what the OP refers to. There are certainly aspects of my life that I'm embarrassed about but I don't try to hide it. I'm comfortable and confident about who I am as a person.

Having said that, I'm an extremely private person socially. I'm essentially a hermit in that I only go out to run necessary errands (typically early morning when most people are sleeping) and go to work. I minimize exposure to other people as much as is reasonably possible.

My family isn't allowed to know about my relationships. I started this policy because my parents were extremely invasive of my privacy - following my car, reading my mail, etc.. I keep my secrets well and respect other's privacy always. I don't bother lying about things, I just refuse to discuss at all and become hostile if pressed on the topic.

I'm super open.

I don't feel comfortable lying about myself(I can lie about other things though) and you can seriously ask me fucking everything, it can be as personal as you want, and I will answer without shame.

Try me.

I'm open with everything but name and real life coordinates here. I try to keep myself from splitting into a different identity when I log on here or when I log onto Facebook (which I admittedly do less and less these days). I just prefer to stay anonymous because as much as I love all you guys, I don't trust the internet as a whole. Meet me in real life and I'll share more with you than I would on any website :)

I used to have no problem at all with revealing my gender, age, interests, sexual preferences, everything except my name and city (and even those are on Facebook).

However, recently I just haven't cared about revealing that information at all. It's not about privacy so much as the fact that I don't want to put forth the effort to reveal that information anymore. No one cares.

I'll answer any question with 100% honesty if asked, though.

I'm not particularly private in real life, but I'm fairly guarded on the internet.

For instance, I never put in my real birthday on websites.

I rarely use my real name (and then, only for my work e-mail). For instance, I signed up for the Escapist using the name of a character from Love Hina, and my user name is a reference to Revolutionary Girl Utena.

I try to use characters who remind me of me.

I also don't like putting in my real address. I often use an old address that I lived at over five years ago. Sometimes I will create a fake address by combining the street address from one city with the zip code of another.

And finally, when I'm feeling really blatant, I use an obviously bogus e-mail address that I've actually signed up for but only "check" to mark everything in it as Spam and delete it.

So yes, I enjoy my internet privacy.

Offline, I'm really not very private at all. Online, I only go just far enough to prevent my real name (outside of facebook) and (usually) location from making an appearance. I'm quite an open person for the most part.

you basically are the same as me, except deleting text messages, i do't do that, but that is because i don't let anyone on my phone (even though there is literally nothing on it)

I think it's good to be able to become private, or open yourself up whenever you choose to. Privacy is a right that I take very seriously, I love a bit of privacy, but I don't get as carried away with it as you OP, but I think that's just laziness, and not bothering to cover up my tracks :p

thus far I've kept my online "me" separate from my real "me". I don't really use facebook much, and even my name there is a foreignized version of my real one; I only use it to chat with a few specific people. I typically use the same screen name for most of my online accounts, though I have another I use occasionally as well when needed.

lets see facebook settings tend to be only my friends can see information about me apart from my gender(which is obvious from my photo), what languages i speak, where I'm from, where I live, my name, favourite quotations, and my about me.

from there i have certain friends who can not see much more than that.

mostly however i am a very public person. There are things that I like to keep to myself and there are things i don't mind putting out there.

I am a fairly open book though and will answer quite honestly too mostly any question asked of me. I am me no matter whether it is online or in person.
